Hi there

I know this topic has been discussed to death but I have perused through the forum and not found what I am looking for...

I am currently an uncapped 384 kb/s Mweb subscriber and honestly, not so impressed as is the general feeling here on MyBB. I honestly do not use a ton of bandwidth, most months I am within 10 gb's per month and on the odd few months go to about 15 gb but it does not happen very often. I have tried downstorm and that option is no longer viable anymore and there are other options out there for VPN in order to avoid shaping but they are not free and if I have to shell out the extra cash i order to unshape any torrents I download, I might as well just upgrade my service. Unfortunately, I do a lot of downloading via http and in this sense, Mweb has been horrendous as I get nowhere near my line speed on supposedly what is meant to be unshaped data. Yet when I use a VPN, my line actually peeks at just over 40 kb/s quite regularly. This has led me to believe it is an mweb service delivery problem and not a telkom ADSL line problem.

So here is my question and I would value everyone's input and feedback regarding this...

As said, I would most likely use 10 gb / month at most and on the odd occasion use somewhere between 10 gb and 15 gb.

So is there a service out there (capped or not) that will offer good service delivery and I won't have any hassles with them. I am looking at spending roughly R400 per month for a 384 kb/s line as that is what I am currently spending (including ADSL line rental).

Afrihost offers a 10 gb per month unshaped service for R190 / month and that + R152 for telkom line rental = R342. Could anyone comment on this service?

Thanks all and I appreciate all responses that I will receive.

Also consider the normal Telkom 9GB offering - slightly more (R239 + R133 I think) with a axxess lite R19/GB addon. Works well here in the East Cape.

Oops again - OPs pricing didn't include phone line @ R133 so Afrihost 10GB = R475 against R543 with Telkom 9GB + Axxess 1GB.

Yeah at the moment I am paying the following:

- Telkom Closer 2 package R170
> Includes 30 min peak (more than enough
for me)
> Free calls to land lines after 7 pm - 7 am

- ADSL 384 kb/s line R152
- Mweb uncapped R219
- Downstorm R 49
- An 'unnamed VPN' R 35
> This is in order unshape downstorm. lol

So total cost is R625.

I usually use around 10 gb - 15 gb per month as I am not a heavy downloader and when I do go to the 15 gb threshold, its because I have downloaded some epic 7 gb game or series or something, which I very rarely do. First few months I did that as I was downloading some DBZ as I wanted decent quality series and movies for collecting them as I could not source anywhere to buy the dvd's. After I did that, I have barely managed 10 gb per month and that includes downloading the infamous large updates from Apple (as I have an iPhone as well as a MacBook Pro, including iLife '09).

So I see things this way...

- Telkom analogue line R170
- Telkom ADSL 384 R152
- Afrihost 10 gb unshaped R190
> Thereby I avoid the need for downstorm or a VPN in order to use downstorm as bandwidth is
unshaped. lol.
- Topup of 3 gb at R29/gb R87

Total cost: R512 (excluding top up)
Total cost: R599

So every month when I do not breach my 10 gb threshold, I would be saving R113 or R1356 per year.
And if I need a little extra, I could get 3 gb's and still save R26 or R312 per year.

So I do have another question, are AfriHost reliable when it comes to providing an internet service?

Stay away as far as possible from Mweb or any IS reseller. Afrihost / Axxess / Openweb / Snowball are all IS resellers and their bandwidth is slow as hell!

Ignore ZeRo_CoOl, just a fanbooi for a certain ISP whose adherents keep getting banned for advertising (check his posts).

I can't comment on Afrihost capped accounts but Axxess Lite is almost as good as my Telkom account.

As mentioned various times over and over again (getting tired to keep repeating myself), I'm talking from personal experience.
If you don't like TRL Tech then that is your problem. There are many other ISPs that do not use IS bandwidth - Cybersmart, Wazzup, Web Africa just to name a few.
Bottom line is that IS / Mweb bandwidth sucks. Do yourself a favour and take a look at all the complaints here on MyBroadBand - all about high latency and slow speed.

And for the record, I've never been banned - feel free to confirm this with the site admins.

Don't see where I said you were, pity about ReubenL and TRLTech though.

All your links refer to MWeb uncapped, the same type of account Icedreama wants to cancel in favour of capped accounts.

Exactly as I am doing - Telkom & axxess lite FTW :D

Well, by steering IceDream in the direction to get an IS based account would be a bad move, capped or uncapped. As I've said before, Mweb and IS based accounts sucks. When someone wishes to change an ISP they normally want something better. In my opinion, and the opinion of various other users, Mweb and IS based accounts are over-priced and they under-deliver. So by recommending an IS based account to IceDream he/she might just as well continue to use the Mweb account as there would be no difference in speed and service. When a client complains about the speed they always have some sort of excuse and shifting the blame. I don't know about you but most ADSL users wants a stable and fast service with minimal problems and downtime - this is something that one would not get with a Mweb or IS based account.

I would also go as far to say that if anyone who is using an Mweb / IS based account are happy with it, then they are not using it properly...

MWEB is not a IS reseller anymore.
They moved away from that when they got their own IPC
if they still have IS ADSL accounts then it is probably old accounts that have not been moved to their own IPC network

as for that I'm happy with my 40GB+ I get on my R219 384kb account

so please tell me where can I get a capped account that is going to give me more for the same or less?

As I've previously said, if you are happy with the current speed your getting from Mweb, then you are not using your adsl connection properly. Geez, why do I have to repeat myself over and over again? It feels like I'm trying to explain something to Julius Malema :wtf:

No Zero you seem to be Malema
Just like Malema you have been given allot and you can’t see the advantages of what you have so you bitch and moan about the people who gave you everything you have saying that they haven’t given you enough

My 384K account does not give me full speed but I'm realistic enough to realize that it is not going to run at full speed all the time with everything since it is n shaped package.

What you are doing is the same as buying an Golf and then not being happy with it because it does not handle as well and is not as fast as n Ferrari.

Your definition of “using it properly” is your own opinion nothing more
And from what I can see a short sighted one

If I needed a connection that can always do MAX line speed then I would pay the extra amount and get the unshaped account.
With that you can max it out at just about any time (Which I do with the 4meg unshaped line I use at work)

So once again I ask you show me a account where you can get more value for less money?
