ADSL Decision

Any feedback on how its going with Afrihost? Considering making the jump.

I'm with Axxess which is from what I hear the same as Afrihost and have no issues.

Same with CrystalWeb (yes I have 2 just in case).

Would not recommend VOX - was with them till a month ago and had endless problems, especially with streaming. Support is extremely slow.

I'd recommend Afrihost or Crystal Web, both fantastic ISP's. Decent service and ADSL performance is great. Give them a try. Stay away from OpenWeb and avoid Mweb and Web Africa.

Hi Guys,

Sorry to jump in on this thread. I have just had a 2mb line activated at my flat (cant really afford faster right now - still getting budget sorted).

The line is costing me R206 all in all p/m (PSTN and 2mb adsl pipe included with a weekender package) via Telkom. They told me I could save on installation/callout fee if I took this option. Rtahter than paying R600-something callout and R189 plus a subsenquent callout to get the adsl going of R700-something.

I now want to add on a data package or switch the line rental to another.

However I assume that if I switch I will be paying R189p/m (PSTN line rental) + DSL pipe cost of other provider (i.e. afrihost) + data cost from provider (ie.afrihost)?

So if I stick with this, for the sake of cost effectiveness, which would be better for me (heavy downloader and streamer - mostly after hours) a capped connection or an uncapped one? I woudl prefer the ease of uncapped but the allure of not being shaped on an capped connection sounds good.

The thing is I am also going to be sharing my connection with a neighbor. She is going to contribute what little she can to the cost. But it wont be much. So uncapped is probably safer in this regard too. I doubt she is a heavy user though. But not aware of updates etc that could eat cap.

I just really want to know from a user perspective what your opinion is. I have always been a fan of simply taking an afrihost uncapped bundle (usually 4mb) but now that I am living alone I have to be a little more thrifty - also afrihost seems to have really bad spells even on our businelss line at my office so not too sure about that. Your input would be much appreciated.

So maybe it would be better for me to just stay with this for

Do you guys have your ADSL line with Telkom or the other ISP's?

My ADSL line is with Telkom. I pay R206 p/m all inclusive for 2mb ADSL pipe, weekender package and PSTN line rental.

I do not yet have a data package. So am trying to figure out if it would be more cost effective to remain with Telkom or switch to a capped/uncapped bundle or just get data elsewhere. And with whom.

Hi,

Have a live chat with our support staff at www.crystalweb.co.za and they can assist with the decision-making process without any forceful sales-pitches...:)

are you sure you paying R206

weekender package + line = R180
DSL 2mbps = R144

^^^ he mentioned weekender+dsl+PSTN line rental for all R208?????

Weekender Line Rental is now R208 inc VAT according to my last account.

Made the tech repeat himself numerous times. Installation fee once off R750 (or so) and R206 per month all inclusive of rental, 2mb adsl pipe and weekender package.

Have yet to see the bill though.

Hi Guys

I'm currently with Crystal Web with their capped package, they are fantastic, but recently Afrihost somewhat renewed their packages, and I gotta say its extremely tempting.

Buuuut, for the pass few months I realize having just 225Gb or 325Gb is not enough for the house. As we have 4 people using internet for streaming, downloading and gaming.

Have been thinking of going uncapped and AH Premium Uncapped got my attention. Anyone had any throttle issues with them? Checked their Leaderboard for downloads, and some users have insane downloads for the premium packages. Even though their soft cap for 20Mbps is 200Gb apparently.

Now I'm still quite skeptical about uncapped packages, as I'm sure many of you have experienced some sort of limitations or throttling at some stage with uncapped packages in the past.

Now I need verification on AH Premium uncapped packages.

What would the best ISP be for gaming? Getting stable and low latency.

I have a 10mbps line and I only use around 80gb per month data.

What's your line speed? As the CEO of Crystal Web I will always suggest simply finding the right package for your needs by chatting to the guys on live chat and letting them help you out. If it ain't broke...;)

Always best to just compare last few pages of the respective ISP feedback threads before you make important decisions...:D

Our 100GB capped or 10Mbps premium home uncapped at Crystal Web would be ideal for low latency gaming...

DJ .......

Still waiting ......

But in the meantime please explain regarding CW packages how the package choice impacts on latency .......

Hi there

I'm on 20mbps line now, with your 225Gb capped package at R549pm.

I've been monitoring hour bandwidth and find that 225GB is not enough, so I did a temporary upgrade to your 325GB pack for the extra 100Gb. And still not enough, had to limit our usage before we use it all up. Lol.

Not gonna lie, Crystal web offer quick live help, great customer service and reliable internet. But unfortunately when I check your package prices, I gotta say your competitions offer better value for money for either capped or uncapped.

Unless Crystal Web is planning to update their packages soon?

We've discovered that it just costs that little bit more per month to offer really premium quality data and service. So having those extra people available on chat and email; buying more capacity than others and incredibly expensive hardware and software; employing highly skilled people; offering premium quality news servers with 2000+ days retention and up to 10 connections; unlimited concurrent on capped; no throttling; truly dynamic shaping; supporting Vumatel, DSL, Telkom Fibre, Octotel, TTConnect and all other last mile providers and deploying our own solutions as well. If all we did was try to price-match everyone else and reduce pricing without relevant input cost reductions, we'd eventually just have to start lowering the quality to end users like we see other ISPs do quite frequently and cyclically and spend ages feeding you nonsense denials. We don't like that business model - we'd rather be slightly more expensive and operate a quality network without all of the BS...

Have the same problem , looking for a new ISP , but I want uncapped. and its down to Webafrica & Axxess. Crystal was upfront that what I was looking was they could not do , so respect for that. But am still looking for a ISP that will let me do 500 gigs on a 10 meg business uncapped, without the threat of throttling or shapping when I touch a torrent.

Would appreciate any feedback , am propbaly going to toss a coin between the two, keeping going from webpage to webpage looking for some insight that will let me take the right decision.
