Can someone please help me...
i have called Telkom several times on this topic but all they say they could do is "reset" my conn. this works for like 1 hour then the prob persists again so if anyone can hlep me or tell what could cause this problem please help...
You can email me [email protected]

You need to start doing some sleuthing detective work.

1) look for any rusty wires or loose connections in your home on your telephone line, anywhere it is exposed to moisture or degradation.

2) look for interference from other power lines or day night sensors or light switches.

3) then see if you can figure out where the line goes from your house to the exchange. Is it exposed to any water? manhole filled with water?

You need to rule out all of those factors first. Telkom will charge you if they have to come out to your house and it is not their fault. But usually dropping lines are as a result of bad copper or exposure.

I had the same problem and after 3 years telkom could not fix it. Problem is due to our neighbor who installed electric fencing and that causes the line to drop every 5mins.

I had to cancel the service in the end :(

I have checked everything and no sign of anything close to water or anything i replugged everything but the problem still persists can someone please tell me what might of caused this?

OK, next step then...

Borrow a different ADSL modem and plug it in to test that it is not your ADSL modem. also try and borrow a laptop to see that it is not your own computer causing the drops.

if you are absolutely convinced that there is no physical problem on your side, then you need to report the dropping fault to Telkom ADSL.

Get a reference number AND KEEP THE REFERENCE NUMBER!!!

Make a list somewhere of all the reference numbers they give you.

Keep calling them back if it keeps doing the same thing until they fix it.

Insist that you need a technician to come out, that they cannot just keep re-setting it over the phone.

it might take a few months, but if you keep calling them back every day and you keep referring to the same reference numbers then eventually you will get it solved.

I have had severe time out issues today from 3 different locations around Johannesburg.

Gary i have checked everything i used my sister's laptop to run "ping www.aardvark.co.za -t" aswell and it says the same thing and i tried it with my other modem d-link dsl300T and it still continues but now i dont have a filter for my phone and my adsl line they said that might be the problem but then i went and took out the phone line then try it again but it is still giving me "request timed out" so im sure its not me...

OK, so you gotta do the phone call thing. When our line was giving problems earlier this year it took us 3 months to sort it out, but I was on the phone almost every day. They would come out and check one thing, re-install DSLAM ports, change connectors, etc. Until finally they traced it down to a rusty wire inside the hole that led into our building.

But if I had not kept calling them every day it would never have got resolved.

Had the same problem about a month ago. Phoned Telkom and the guy on the otherside was able to verify right then and there that there was an underlying issue so he sent out his techie who arrived the next morning and replaced some bad copper. I continue to live happily ever after.

...but before doing all this, investigate your Telkom exchange!

I had that problem yesterday...4 meg line dropping continually, phoned their ADSL call centre, a port reset helped, line is now stable

sorry but wat do u mean by telkom exchange?

There could be an issue with your local telephone exchange port (most common DSL issue, besides telephone line pots filters not being in place) - if Telkom does not address the issue to your satisfaction forward your query to:

What i have noticed is on my router there are "pwr" "data" "link" "lan" lights.
Every light is stable but only for data light it keeps blinking and flashing never stable.
And everytime it reconnects the "link" light goes off then comes back on. Is it because the "data" light is not and is this what it is caused by? If it is please also tell what i can do to fix it?
