Hi everyone
I've been having some major issues with my ADSL line as of late and wondering if anyone knows what might be the issue - in the cape town (sea point) area.

About a month and a half ago my ADSL started to drop and would go down for days, due to what I suspect was DNS issues. Afrihost handle my line as well as my data, but the problem is definitely with Telkom (tested other routers and ISP details, same result).

Telkom eventually came over last week and replaced the old telephone wiring in my house, and since then the line has been mostly stable. However every night like clockwork at around 7pm, the problems would kick in again - ADSL would go down intermittently for a minute and then back up for a minute, and this would carry on for about an hour.

Afrihost support has been fantastic but Telkom are being pretty useless - a support ticket has been opened with them but telkom marked it as "cleared", even though i go through these drops every night.

Afrihost have escalated this again with them, but anyone else been experiencing these drops and / or know what might be causing the issue?

Thanks for your time!

Welcome to the world of congested exchanges.

This happens because everyone is now home and ready to torrent the crap out of that exchange.

So this issue of mine is still occuring every morning and evening, and last night I ran PingPlotter from just before the line drops normally kick in.

See screeshot here, red bars indicate 100% packet loss which last between 20-40 seconds

Anyone else experiencing issues like this? I've escalated this to Telkom more times than I can count now, and every time they report my line as free of defects :(

I asked for line stats and you post line tests, stats are found in your router.

Thanks Rickster. Not sure how to get those as I use a netgear DG834G as my modem with my Asus RT-N66U as the router, so would the line stats be on the modem side which I'm unable to access? If so, any other way to pull these? Thanks for your insight

Just temporarily use the netgear as the router to check.

When you said "I use a netgear DG834G as my modem" did you mean as a Access point?

Correct, netgear is the access point acting in modem mode. When I get home I'll remove the ASUS out of the equation and run the netgear as the sole modem/router over the weekend, and post stats as soon as possible. Thanks again

Ive been on a 4mb uncapped line for 6 months. zero problems and consistently good speeds. Last Friday night at about 6pm the line was so slow you cant even open google web page. about 1 am it comes right. Been like that for a week now and also speeds during the day are around 1mb , not 4mb.

Phone telkom 3 times a day. techie has come out twice. They say there is no problem.

@OP, do you have an alarm system or any other device(s) that use your Telkom lines at home?

Thanks, I do have an alarm system but I've already tested this as well as inquired with the alarm people to see if any automated systems are in place, apparently the call to them is only made if the alarm goes off.

Based on that, I've tested it by setting my alarm off and seeing if anything on the ADSL side is affected, but everything was fine

Yup Telkom dont recognize my issue either and its been months, very frustrating. I would install PingPlotter and let it run during the problem times, I was surprised at how often my line was dropping during the 6-8pm time

It's the routine that led me to think that... i.e. something is triggering the signal drop.

Last (DIY) option - do you have a spare POTS filter to test with?

Nope but I have tried testing without the filter as well, same result. Will try get another one to test though

Hi All, OK so tonight I took my ASUS N66U Router out of the equation and just hooked up my other Netgear DG834G modem router (My other Netgear acts as a bridge for the Asus)

Issue started again tonight as usual, this time from around 7:15pm through to just after 8pm. After that, everything normalizes.

Post your line stats.

Rickster, see link here for the TXT doc from my netgear. Is that what you're looking for? https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4XEz3WKcogEcnJQSmM2RFRWV0U/edit?usp=sharing

Really at wits ends on this, especially when telkom's response to me is "As per fault reference 61BWK280614, tech was out and found no fault on the line."

Something in your setup scheduled to "check for updates" at that time?
Maybe fool the system by setting your time back an hour or two ?

Thanks already checked that, ran full factory default resets on all the devices and made no difference. Cant be my PC either as this issue happens even when its off
