ADSL drops intermittently around 7pm

Yup, either your line or your exchange is having some serious issues. We're currently watching your exchange for you so by this time tomorrow we can establish exactly what the issue is for you.

In one of the traces sent to us the OP's packet loss was happening on the router. We're investigating on our end as well for the OP.

Thanks I think this might be a quirk with the program, as that Packet Loss on the router side seemed to happen when I test the connection with my other netgear 834 device on its own (as modem/router, single device).

When using PingPlotter with my Modem and Router Combo (Netgear 834 and Asus N66U), i dont see any packet loss on the first hop. At least thats my assumption :erm:

HUGE THANKS again for this, as well as to the other contributers on the thread. Beyond frustrating. Telkom sent me this SMS earlier today, after I begged them to call me directly:

"Dear Valued Telkom Customer, your service on 021 434 XXXX has been re-tested and found to be free of defects" :wtf: Thanks for that Telkom, looks really healthy

So right on cue the issues started again tonight at around 6pm:

CrystalWeb sent some test ADSL details which I plugged in 15 minutes ago (thanks for those), but the results are the same:

quick update: Got a call from Telkom this morning and they're busy checking things on their end as well.

Also no issues this morning so far which is nice for a change, continuing to monitor

Here's the data for your exchange:

Your exchange is not looking too healthy to be honest - there was downtime and there are some very unusual spikes, as well as a high baseline measurement. In addition, while connected to our trial accounts we picked up on multiple port errors on your connection.

I am quite certain that Telkom are experiencing problems at your exchange.

Thanks v much for this. Would it be possible to monitor this tonight for that 5pm-9pm period? This morning has been relatively trouble free, but always seems to hit hard at night.

This is whats been going on today, very tiny packet losses here and there compard to previous nights, but still not loking healthy to me

We will continue to monitor this for you on an on-going basis.

Thanks. Telkom gave me a call and told me they were going to check out the exchange, and my line has been down completely since 2:45pm. Hopefully that's due to them working on it, but will update you when they get back to me.

Oddly enough that is actually good news. The line will go down if they are actually working on it.

I sincerely hope that you come right soon.

Yup I just spoke to the Telkom engineer and they'll be switching me to a totally different port sometime tomorrow. hopefully that will make a difference but will continue to monitor tonight and update when I hear more. Cheers

Telkom confirmed that my port has been changed on the exchange side an hour ago, so hopefully this sorts things out. Will test during the 5-8pm period tonight and feedback with findings.

Good news. Let's hope it helps.

Since Telkom changed my port this afternoon (12:15-12:30 on the graph), everything has been really good! No extended or major packet loss at all. So the issue seems to have been definitely related to the exchange. Here's the graph for today:

I'm continuing to monitor, but looking good. Finally! Fingers crossed my line issues are solved, so I wanted to send my gratitude out again to everyone who assisted on this thread, especially Crystal Web and TelkomZA who I've been communicating with directly. You guys have really been amazing thank you

That is actually quite bad, 122ms on 1st hop indicates exchange congestion.

I see very brief spikes at the 1:35pm and 8:10pm mark, but the rest looks pretty normal? Let me know if I'm missing something

Nothing to be concerned about really - they're occasional spikes. You appear to have a far more solid connection now. Great news!

So much to my dismay, I noticed this happening tonight again. Not nearly as bad as previous nights before the port switch, but not what it should be either? Keeping an eye on it...

Change the resolution of the chart to only show those most recent red bars and let's see what your latency is like then. Also don't worry much about all of the hops. Monitor your router, your exchange, and your final hop in the charts unless you suspect your ISP or the peering links have issues.

Also run pathping to your choice of destination from the command prompt when you notice these issues.

Pingplotter has an alerts system - set it up to alert you each time the second hop exceeds 20ms. When that happens, run pathping and post the results here or email them to us and we'll try to see what's going on.

You can also get in touch and try another account for a bit to test with and we'll see what data we can pull from our system

As an aside, based on our tests your exchange was performing rock solidly for a while until midday today, at which point it went a little berserk and has had some hiccups since then until right now (looking at the live data)

Great thanks for the feedback, have set up the alert on PingPlotter and will feed back tomorrow evening, cheers
