ADSL drops intermittently around 7pm

Visit your neighbours one by one at 6.55 pm , listen for a foreign language in the background....:D

VoxDSL seems to own the range http://myip.ms/info/whois/197.245.0.0

I think the data on some sites is just a bit dated.

Thanks all will try get some more info from Vox on that, but the packet loss occurs on other ISP's too. This happens in the morning as well around the same time (i.e. right now), here's a shot from PingPlotter for my Afrihost 1gb capped account

On an aside, the latency on this account seems unusually high

Try tracert another website such as www.mybroadband.co.za.

And if possible could you not link it to google drive? Use a screenshot uploading program. (like puush, then you just CTRL+SHIFT+4 and it will upload and copy the link to your clipboard, then you paste that link within "insert images"

Nice one just installed puush. This is mybroadband at the moment but will run it again tonight near the problem time c66f1159a4.jpg

Just got home and checked the PingPlotter, looks like this issue of mine is happening a lot more often than the times I previously noted. Besides the 6-8 am/pm period, turns out this happens a lot more during day. See screenshot

Never heard of pathping before, thanks for the tip!
Any idea what it's actually doing :) I'm finding mine only gets as far as the router, then can't give any stats past there!

Only found out about tracert a couple of years ago - so love to learn about new tools (especially ones already included in cmd!)

Also try this in cmd:

pathping www.mybroadband.co.za

PS: it takes a while, try not to use the internet at this time.

Thanks for that, will run that tomorrow evening.

I also called telkom and asked them to drop the line speed from 10mb to 6mb, to see if that makes any difference to the line stability over the problem period tomorrow. cheers

Protip, don't tick the box in "insert images". :)

makes sense, thanks

Ok so issue occurring this morning as expected, this is whats been going on (tested on Mweb domain this time):

Observations from weekend:

1) Dropping the line speed from 10mbs to 6mbs has made no difference to the stability of the line

2) Major packet loss occurs like clockwork 6-9am or -6-9pm, but also occurs throughout the day, regardless if its during the work week or weekend

3) Issue occurs across a number of domains (google, mybroadband, mweb etc)

4) After replacing my physical connections (LAN cable, POTS filter) and testing the connection on an entirely different router/modem which was factory reset, the issue doesn't seem to be hardware related on my end.

The only thing that comes to mind is exchange congestion, have you PMed afriman to ask him how full your exchange is?

One last test (should have done this 1st), tracert www.mybroadband.co.za in cmd during the time of packet loss.

Main ISP is with VOX from this month, but I've tested across different providers last month (WebAfrica, VoX and Afrihost), nothing made a difference when testing with either of them...

I know you tested via pingplotter, I would like you to do a tracert in the cmd as its a bit more detailed.

Pingplotter runs tracerts. What the OP needs to do is change the view options in pingplotter to show the charts for all of the hops, as this will indicate exactly where the issue was at the time. Roger, if you double click a hop in pingplotter it will display the chart for it as well. You'll need to be looking at most of them at first to start ruling them out once by one.

We're also monitoring the exchange for the OP and will post results once we have sufficient data.

It has to be the exchange or else I'm clueless.

In one of the traces sent to us the OP's packet loss was happening on the router. We're investigating on our end as well for the OP.

Thanks, you mean like so?
