ADSL drops intermittently around 7pm

OK so things are really borked tonight, here's the pingplotter image:

@Crystal Web I've PM'd you as well, thanks!

Sorry for the late entry into this discussion, I am just down the road from the OP, Green Point. The same messed up situation I had to endure...all good and perky, come 7pm...everything goes to hell. Did the whole try different ISP, try different router...blah blah...no difference. Telkom monitored the line, and concluded no issue...Note: My line quality is only good for 6Mbits..So stable right up to 7pm, and then an hour plus of misery...anyways, ...one day at 7pm, noted no issues...checked my router,...my modulation had changed from GMT to ADSL2+...since then, no issue...clear sailings.

Thanks for the feedback on this, glad I'm not the only one. My problem is still ongoing and I've been dealing with Telkom directly over the past 2 weeks or so. The guy I've been in touch with has been awesome, and I've been waiting to be moved to an entirely different rack this week (spot just opened up apparently).

From Telkom: "Can confirm that I was able to find a spare, fault has been dispatched to have the service diverted from Sea Point 9 to Sea Point 11, hoping that it will be actioned during the course of the day.
Not really sure (but hoping) if this will resolve the issue but at least we will eliminate it as a variable if it does persist."

So holding thumbs this will make a difference, I've eliminated everything locally so I can only assume now its a problem with that particular exchange.

Can you elaborate on what you mentioned with "modulation had changed from GMT to ADSL2+.", essentially what you think they might have done to fix it? Thanks man

Correction G.dmt , not GMT...Yep, as soon as I was switched over to ADSL2+ modulation had no more stability issues. Think its best to drop TelkomZa a PM and asked to be changed. I tried once to push up the speed, they got me up to 8Mbits, on normal G.dmt modulation...but when 7pm came, same old crap started. They (telkom helpline) then pushed me down to 6Mbits again and I asked to place on a ADSL2+ modulation...they could not select modulation, default was G.dmt. After a couple of days, modulation was back to ADSL2+ and I just left it as is...no more issues...good luck, I know the frustration you are having!

Thanks that makes sense. According to Telkom I'm on a newer DSLaM with ADSL2+, but hopefully the new rack I get moved to will sort this out, as yup it's been driving me nuts... kind of like chinese water torture every night when you know the packet loss is coming

OK so been a while but this has finally been 100% resolved!

My line had still been experiencing major sync issues up until last week and Charl @ Telkom organized a proper engineer to come over to my place and investigate whats going on. He tested everything including replacing my modem which is bridged to my Asus N66U router with his own one. With my own previous testing, I have 2 Netgear DG834's and one other from a mate (also netgear), and all showed sync issues when testing, so I eliminated those from the equation. Turns out the bridging modem was the culprit on my side. As soon as he plugged in his D-LINK, the line synced fine.

So something with those netgears in bridge mode were causing the problem, no idea what is was that would cause it but I've sinced replaced it with a D-LINK 2750 and everything has been perfect (apart from some unrelated ISP specific issues)

So wanted to send huge thanks again to

Crystal Web: Thanks again for reaching out to me in this thread and for taking the time to monitor and test my line, really appreciate it and you guys are awesome. Thanks for the recent DM as well, busy reviewing!

Telkom ZA / Charl: What can I say that hasn't been said many, many times by anyone you've helped before. You are a proper legend! This issues goes back months and you went over and beyond in getting the right people on the case. Whatever they're paying you, you deserve double! thanks again

RogerWilcoZA - to clarify, did you change to bridge mode and thats when the issue started? OP is not clear - seems that the start of the issue was more random...

Reason i'm asking is I'm experiencing similar issues, but my config has not changed, I've always used the d-link 2500u in bridge mode... i do have a spare modem though, maybe tonight i should try it and see if it could be the modem too.

My guess is that it was a combination of 2 things: 1) my exchange connection was dodgy, and 2) my modem was dodgy.

The netgear which was acting as the modem only device connected/bridged to my Asus N66U router was probably amplifying the exchange issue, as in the beginning I was experiencing packet loss at very specific times of the day and night, mainly when congestion gets bad (8am in the morning and around 6-8pm in the evening). Telkom changed my port to a different rack and while I still experienced packet loss here and there, it was bearable up until about a month ago when I started getting major sync issues throughout the day and for extended periods. Since the modem swap, this has been totally sorted, I haven't noticed any packet loss at all with the D-link which is currently in bridge mode.

Are you experiencing the packet loss at weird times or is it pretty predictable?

its fairly predictable. i found between 7 and 9pm it was bad, but at 5-6am it was perfect... i couldn't understand why a hardware issue on client side would cause this... exchange congestion fits better...

nonetheless, your thread has made me try a different modem and at least i can see if its that!
