ADSL IPC price cut desperately needed: ISP execs

Yeah, and Telkom needs to provide better service! ....:D

What?

:p
OK, so I thought this was a thread of "Impossible Goals"

And just how much will any of these proposed cost cuts be passed on to us consumers? Looks like the ISP's have some margin squeeze and need to find a way to make their masters happy.

ICASA’s ‘learnt helplessness’ has caused most of our current regulatory failures, simply because the big telcos’ lawyers taught ICASA that they are incapable of ever really doing anything, and if they did do something that they would get sued. Thus ICASA ended up being too nervous to do anything.
Added to that the councillors come and go so quickly they can't be held accountable and by the time their term ends they have just learnt about the industry as many of them are not qualified when they start.
In the past councillors have been poached by the big telcos giving those big telcos inside knowledge of ICASA and how to delay any positive change.

“ICASA is a waste of time, money, fresh air and the taxpayers’ money,” Diedericks concluded.
The sad thing is that people have known about this for a long time and nothing has been done about it.
Pity SA government thinks people talking a few days a year in meetings/conferences/talk shops is actual work.

If uncapped is so sustainable, whats with all the panic and urgency?

Without a framework from ICASA, Telkom will drag its heels and do fukkol!

Perhaps someone should get Telkom to broadcast porn over bitstream for ICASA to take note.
Wait, they kind of already are a conduit for that...

“Government should just fold ICASA back into a department inside the DOC. ICASA’s ability and function is completely useless at this point, and they have never been ‘Independent’ as their name implies in any case,”

About time someone told them.

You can't be serious ? For real ?

It is inevitable that the savings will be passed on to the customer. It has been proven time and again that the ISP market is highly competitive, because competition can't be stopped like in Telkom's case.

You do kind of almost come across as some closet telkom fanboy.

You hardly ever see a saving being passed onto clients (in the broader scheme of things)
All ISP's off set one (saving on an ) account against the next.
Capped users are subsidising uncapped accounts.

ISP's realistically need wholesale IPC costs to come down to give them a bit of breathing room, wrt to their current profits.
Which ain't wrong.
Cos we all know that TelkomInternet enjoys way too much of a lemming monopoly and are sitting pretty with the majority of clients. And that I'd like to see taken away from them.

10%-20% savings from IPC ain't gonna be passed onto clients IMO.
Perhaps Afrihost, but they're already running low wrt to pricing.

Maybe it's because most proper entrepeneurs like to move forward and progress and provide better services more than once in 5 years ?

If the cost of uncapped is gonna come down, the pricing of IPC will have to be reduced. That is the crux of the matter. And it is my opinion that the savings will be passed on to the customer, I have no reason yet to believe otherwise.

uncapped is such a stupid term anyway. The introduction of the per-GB billing system was the most retarded thing ever to happen to SA internet access.

So because we'd like to see the price of uncapped to come down, Telkom must drop IPC pricing?
Not happening - Telkom has never in 30 years done anything for the sake of the greater good or what we as consumers want.
Its taken other corporate or business entities in the ISP sphere to get Telkom to react over the years and give TI clients a bump up for 8/10Mbps and give them another 3GB per account - thus keeping the lemmings highly satisfied

 How now?
Uncapped stupid term, per GB billing most retarding thing to happen... So what is it that you want or prefer? :erm:
Capped or ...

My sentiment exactly. We can only hope that they can somehow be forced some day, because otherwise I also cannot see it happening, progress is not something telkom or the SA government is interested in. Their marketing department do an okay job of making it sound like they do though.

Nowhere else on earth (or extremely few places :p ) is ISP access labelled as uncapped, they just have fair usage policies and softcaps at a very fair threshold of something of at least 100GB+. In other words they control their user base in a more forthcoming and dynamic way. Another example is pooling all the heavy users together etc.

Telkom introduced the per-GB billing system because their network is up to ****, or the residential access network at least, and very likely to create another way to extort the internet using public. Back when they did this all the ISP's that now offer their own uncapped products, were simply just reselling telkom bandwidth.

Met jou.

Yes, they (ISP's) may as well just get to selling 50GB or 100GB unshaped accounts at decent prices.
I can't see anyone (anyone sane) doing more than 100GB per month. There's only so much movies, series, books and porn (well maybe not porn :D ) one can download in a month and actually watch.

*going off topic a bit, so I'm leaving it there :)

Agree, 50-100GB+ unshaped accounts at reasonable prices would be great.
I mean once you up to date with most things you or at least I end up doing much less than that!

As long as Telkom is making money, nothing will happen! Cable theft is a big problem for them, so that might be the reason why they push clients off to wireless solutions like GSM or others!

I think Mr Wilcocks from IS also needs to look at his pricing. All other ISP's are dropping pricing except IS. They want IPC to drop but I seriously doubt they will drop their pricing because their margins are ridiculous. Well done to companies like Mweb who do compete.
