ADSL is ok, Voice line dead. Why?

Hi Guys

About a week ago our telephone line went simply dead, no dialtone at all and nobody can phone us but at the same time our ADSL on the same line works 100%.

Logged a voice fault and must unfortunatelly admit that a Telkom tech arrived within a few hours. Did NOTHING here but said the problem was with a box in our area.

Today our line is again dead but ADSL 100%

How is that possible?
 
The Telkom tech touched nothing here and I also swapped the ADSL Filter with a new one before logged the fault.

Also tried to connect the phone as well as my dialup modem direct to the wall socket (i.e without ADSL) but still dead as in "Helkom"

SNR Margin : 19.5 12.0 db
Line Attenuation : 58.0 31.5 db
Data Rate : 512 256 kbps

At old place had a 4GB line but here we can only connect with 512kbps (But strange enough I don't seems much, if any, slower. (We was in fact further from the exchange (Krugersdorp) than that we are now (Roodepoort)
 
Yep, and still we pay for ADSL on top of the voice line rental. Your fault clearly shows that you CAN have ADSL without a voice line.

No, voice line is dead for PHONE, but not for ADSL.
ADSL is still using the voice line. (at another frequency than telephone)

That;s why I cannot understand why the ADSL works but there is no dialtone. Definitively NOT telephone or equipment this side.
 
ADSL can work on 1 wire. Where as voice ie analog phones and modems require 2 wires to work. Hence why ADSL works and no dialtone on line.

Report it to Telkom, they will more than likely find a short on the line or a brocken cable.
 
ADSL works on single wire

ADSL can work over one wire whilst dialtone (speech) requires both, twisted copper pair from Exchange to customer.

DSL transmits at different frequencies for upstream and downstream over both wires, the twists in copper create attenuation, SNR, impedance, etc. One wire disconnected does allow frequencies to be transmitted, therefore ADSL still syncs, but transfer rate will be affected. Also note the devices at Exchange (DSLAM) and customer are powered separately.

Dialtone - speech requires a complete circuit from a "battery" and telephone requires power from exchange. The exchange supplies voltage, negative on one wire and earth return on other, speech is transferred as a frequency which simply changes the line voltage.
