I recently upgraded my Mweb ADSL line from a 2mbps to 4mbps uncapped. My internet connection keeps dropping every couple of minutes, the ADSL light on the router goes off and then flashes or re-syncs for a couple of seconds and then is solid for +-10 minutes before it happens again. Very frustrating when you are streaming TV. Can anyone please tell me if my line is good or not. Thanks

Line status:

Upstream line rate (kbit/s) 509
Downstream line rate (kbit/s) 4093
Upstream SNR (dB) 29.5
Downstream SNR (dB) 33.05
Upstream line attenuation (dB) 6.5
Downstream line attenuation (dB) 15.0

Your line stats looks good, so that's not the issue.

Had a similar issue once, Telkom said that there's something wrong at the exchange and asked me to change my Line Mode on my router to ADSL g.dmt from ADSL2+ , no idea why but that sorted out my issues and the line has been stable ever since.

Thanks, I will try that tonight. I've also going to try my other router to see if that makes a difference as well. I just needed to know if it was the line or not, process of elimination. Thanks again.

Yip your line stats are good - good enough to allow a stable 10mbps connection. Ask Telkom to do a port reset. I've found that sometimes after doing an upgrade/downgrade on your line speed, funny things happen, and the best way to resolve them is with a port reset.

You might also want to replace your POTS filter. It's possible that it was a bit faulty all along, but didn't affect your slower 2mbps connection (higher SNR - can handle more instability), but does act up on a higher speed line (lower SNR, can handle less instability).

What modem do you currently have? And have you ever had any similar issues while you were on a 2mbps line?

When i was on a normal DSLAM it was fine on GDMT, they moved me to a IMAX? DSLAM and the connection would drop until i changed it to ADSL2+ or Annex M

Thanks Saajid, I will also try the port reset and another pots filter. The router is a cheap Netgear DG834, my other one I want to try is a Netgear N600, much better quality. I've just moved into the house with mates about a month ago, so I will have to find out from them, but they are not too clued up with all this and just try to get things set up properly so we all can enjoy. Used to have 8mbps capped account at old house and all worked well. Thanks again.

Im currently using the DG834Gv5, such a very good, stable router.

So what you have to do is go into the router and select ADSL settings then pick ADSL2+ or Annex M.

Agreed. The Netgear router might be an older model and cheap nowadays, but it is a solid performer. I've still got quite a few of these running at various sites for years without issues.

I was not aware that Telkom supports Annex M. From what I've read previously, this should increase your upload speed to about 2-3mbps. Can you confirm if you are running on Annex M, and what your upload speed is?

On Annex M the stats are the same as ADSL2+
