ADSL line drops when phone rings

its a brand new filter out the box...

maybe Im connecting it wrong? lol

1 wire coming out the wall which runs into the next room (where I am). That goes into a box which has 2 x RJ11 connectors. I have the DSL plugged into the one, and the phone plugged into the other...

This filter is lying next to me, where to I plug that in?

edit : its in series with the phone connection. ADSL still drops

is it supposed to be in series with the ADSL connection???
 
So u got one wire that plugs into the side of the pots filter with one connector only. This is the wire from the wall socket...

Then two wires coming out the filter - one to your dsl, one to your line.

Make sure you have the right one to the right item - ie line to line and dsl to dsl
 
You need them on all lines afaik so if you got a 2nd phone in the house you need a filter on there too. Also not uncommon for them to be faulty out the box.
 
Mine also does the same thing. I have replaced all the filters twice and my router three times.
No matter what I do when the phone rings my internet drops.
It's been like this for two years now.
When I phone Telkom, they blame my equipment.
When the Telkom guy comes out he can't find anything wrong.
He said it was my network hub nedt to the router that was causing the problem, but how would he know?
I have 5 hubs spread out all over my house, my entire house is network wired.

I've even tried different brands of micro filters, but nada.
I think the problem is on Telkom's side, because the line drops even when I have no physical analog equipment plugged in.
I did an experiment, I disconnected all my telephones and packed them away in a box.
Then I had my Mom phone.
Obviously I could not hear her calling, but as soon as she called my Internet dropped.

When I answer the phone, I can hear this loud hissing noise that goes on for about a minute, and then goes away.
The rest of the phone call is normal.

When I check my router after a phone call it usually says "Link Down"

The Filter has one socket for the DSL and one for the Phone. So it should work just fine.
But I've tried it the way you suggested as well.

Could be a card/cable problem then where they plugged it incorrectly or it's faulty.

Some people say it could be a voltage problem with the connection not giving the right voltage for the dsl to work when the phone is in use.

got an alarm unit with a dialout via phone? they sometimes automatically answer the line and need a filter too.
 
Also those old-style fax/telephone/answering machines seem to poll for a fax signal / sound and then cause this to happen.
