Anybody else having problems with speed. My 4Mbps line is only connecting at 384Kbps. Telkom says they have general problem and everybody is connecting at a slow speed and they are busy working on the problem.

I live in Sonstraal Heights, Durbanville, Cape Town.

i think he was being sarcastic
my line is also screwed up, got a 384 tho, and when i try to game on the saix servers it gets very inconsistent

I phoned Telscum again on 0800 375 375 and they told me to phone 10215 for the line speed problem.

So I phoned and they said no I must phone 0800 375 375 for the line speed problem. So I phoned the 0800 number again and they told me that according to their system I'm only paying for a 384 line  which is not true since I've been paying for a 4mbps line for the last 2 years.

And then they told me I must phone 10219 to ask them why does it show 384kbps and not 4Mbps. And guess what the 10219 only works during the week 8-5.

All I can say is f&*^$%$ Telkom you bloody idiots.

Dude had the exact same problem and run around recently.. (although on a new line installation where I requested 4Mb/s and got 384 Kb/s)

What solved it for me: (After phoning around for about 4 days..)

Phone 0800 375 375 and insist on speaking to a supervisor no matter what they tell you.
The supervisor I got hold of placed a conference call between themselves, Orders, Accounts etc. & got the supervisor from the dept. who actually had the line speed placed incorrectly...
She then tracked who messed it up - And my line was sorted within an hour afterwards.

PS - I'm also in Sonstraal Heights, Durbanville

Line is synching nicely @ 4Mb/s

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 3 db 1 db
Noise Margin 19 db 13 db

im in the durbanville, the crest, no problems here. could just be your account setup incorrectly or a faulty port/card at the exchange(dslam) since other ppl in your area are not having the problem.

I phoned 10219 this morning and the woman says, 'I can see your account is for a 4Mbps line so why does the support line tell you they cannot change it to 4Mbps'

And then she tells me I must phone the 0800 375 375 again, because she cannot tell them to change it. At this point I really feel like blowing up Telkom.

So I phoned the 0800 375 375 again and the guy on the other line says to me 'I can see it's not right, let me correct if for you'. WTF, why could they not do this over the weekend when I phoned them the first time.

When I get home this evening I really hope my line is running at 4Mbps.

Ok, so I get home and my line speed is 1Mbps and not 4Mbps. So I phone the 0800 number again and this time the person helped me quickly to change it to 4Mbps.

Overall experience of Telkom support = terrible, shocking, pathethic.

Speed issues

PM me ur tele number, I will PM u test results of line conditions if available, and possible cause of speed degradation. I got contacts in Telkom.

Lower than 4 meg is an option for long lines and bad quality lines. Repetitive speed tests from telkom.co.za must display transfer rate of 10% of ur link on successive tests, fluctuating transfer rates indicate cable problem, NB transfer rate starts high and stabilises at 10%. Also note don't have to transfer entire file, 50% transfer will indicate problems. setup modem with guest1@telkomadsl for username and guest1 as password, else every xfer is 9.73 meg, ur bandwidth cap will be chewed. Also note peering links could deny other isp speed transfer from Telkom.co.za.
