Good Day Everyone,

I am currently looking at 2mb uncapped adsl from Afrihost. They advertise that they deal with Telkom on your behalf. I would just like to know something in terms of costs.

How much will I pay for the copper line to be installed by Telkom?

I am assuming I will pay the following per month, please correct me if I am wrong:

Telkom Line Rental: R189pm (New price as from 1st of May)
Afrihost 2MB Line Speed: R159pm incl VAT
Afrihost Uncapped ADSL up to 2mbps: R297pm incl VAT.

Will I be paying R645 per month?

Thanks in advance!

Rather go for Telkom Simple Uncapped, R579 per month for everything.
http://www.telkom.co.za/sites/athom...etanddatabundles/&productname=Simple Uncapped

You'll get a free ADSL installation (first timer), free wifi modem and free 3g USB modem with free 2,4gb mobile data. It's a month-to-month package.

The package includes:
Telkom line rental
2mb speed dsl line 75gb-90gb working hour data (7am-12pm) ,therafter throttle kicks in
150gb or more during night surfer time (midnight-7am)

To apply, go to a Telkom Store near you. It's easier and faster.

Thank you. Thing is I already have an adsl router and two mobile data contracts with Vodacom (1x5gb pm),&,(1x 10gb per month)
I had to go with Vodacom because Telkom Mobile's as well as the MTN and Cell C's reception is very bad in my area where I live. So some of the extras just be a waste for me. Nothing bad meant by that.

Hi dyllindd,

I am also in the same boat, trying to compare deals to get the best service/value for money.
I need a Telkom landline so I am going with the Telkom weekend plan for R206pm (includes line rental).
I then want to take a combo deal from Axxess (4Mpbs + 30gb) for R369pm. I think you get an extra 30gb with the
current promotion, just not sure about nightsurfer.
So this should cost me R575pm.

If there's no nightsurfer with Axxess, I think I will settle with the do Advanced (4Mbps + 20gb) with Telkom for R395pm.
So with the landline of R206, this should be R601pm with unlimited nightsurfer.

Hi.
Thanks to a FUBAR with my current wireless provider I am also looking at ADSL for the first time.
I looked at the Telkom pages because of the free installation but it says " Customer must sign a compulsory debit order and 24 month sales agreement to pay off the device" - so this isn't month to month surely? Or do you just decline "the device" (not sure if this is referring to the wifi modem or the 3G modem or both...)
Thanks

Hi Divv
All Telkom Simple Packages are month to month,no need to sign a 12 or 24 month contract. When I signed up the Simple package I specifically asked this question to the consultant.
The consultant told me a minimum of three months of staying with Simple package is required to avoid the freebies being billed and the billing of freebies is done by the Telkom computer system.
So I would recommend a rather six months of stay with Telkom, since there's nowhere a printed phases can be found of mentioning 'only three months to avoid paying back freebies'. The last thing one needs is a lawsuit with Telkom after receiving the bills of paying back these freebies after switching ISP from Telkom in exactly three months time.

I was in the same boat as you two months ago, been with a wireless ISP.I had no ADSL modem or Telkom line at home. Simple package solves everything and saves a lot. I walked into a Telkom store on a Wednesday at 3pm and by 2pm that week Friday I got internet.

Hi xln.. thanks for the input.
Things got rushed along today when my move away from the other ISP got pushed up so I also went to a Telkom shop just before 5 today... they SAID it should take about 7 days and I hope they are right because then I will be up and running before the old service runs out at month end.
I also asked about the device and not being on a contract and they said I still get it so its quite positive!!

Thanks again.

wow... two interesting discoveries:
1) As I browse through iburst section, I realised we were indeed in the same boat, as I was with iburst from late 2007 till the end of Jan this year. Save for the first year, I never had a connection or reception issues. The reason for switching is speed. 1mbps back in 2007 and still 1mbps on uncapped in 2015.

2) there's no more Telkom Simple packages offered on Telkom website.

Even last night, I have seen the promo packages as I was replying at another thread.
If you've signed the Simple package at 5pm today, you just may BE the last person in SA to get them.:D

LOL I wondered if you'd come from them when you said you were on wireless...
As far as Simple is concerned I searched on the website for Simple today and it came up there?

The million dollar question is, what are you going to use your internet for.

Web/youtube
Games
HTTP downloads
or torrents?

Perhaps they are trying to get more people on the "Do" deals so they are hiding "Simple" and unless you know to search for it you won't find it. (Its thanks to myBB posts that we do know about it!)
But from the above link there was also (lower down, among "associated products" a link to Simple+ (the 4 MBit/sec, 20GB softcap version).
Also the staff at the Telkom shop said nothing about it getting phased out or anything, I just said I wanted to sign up and they gave me the form and processed it no hassle...

Hi again folks...
So it seems Telkom may be coming tomorrow to install the line (hooray!)
My new newbie question is: if I am getting Simple (supposedly free installation etc) do I need to do any "self-installation" or will they do everything to get me set up and running? On another thread I read something about "selecting self-installation" to avoid a hefty fee but I'm not sure if this applies in the Simple case.. I didn't see anything along those lines in the paper form I filled in but TBH most of that form I didn't know what to fill in and the Telkom store person told me to leave it all blank...
Thanks

And true to promise Telkom arrived yesterday to set up the line; finished around 5 and didn't have a modem with him so promised to bring one first thing this morning - which he did.
The techie had told me what to do yesterday to set it up so in the end I guess it does could as self-install and I am up and running - really quite painless in the end!
