ADSL Price Comparison

Telkom owns every one with the local gigs, to be honest.

I need local access from the first of the month and don't see why I should waste my international just to get to the local only telkom provides after using my international. So I have 2x ADSL accounts and then use RouterOS to do traffic splitting.

Telkom thus doesn't "owns" nothing for me

To be fair, it would probably have been better to wait for Afrihost's post-special price before doing this comparison. Apart from Afrihost (obviously) it still seems that nothing quite matches up to Telkom's 5GB/30GB offer. And you also have to consider the discounts you can get by bundling do-3 or do-closer-3.

I don't see Cybersmart on the table, but then I guess it is hard to compare an ISP that distinguishes on line speed. On a 4MB/s line, Cysmart's 3GB package is priced even higher than MWEB. But maybe their Night-rider add-on makes up for that.

Top up prices per gig would be a nice addition to the table. Also per gig prepaid offerings would complete the picture.

Well I use G-Connect. Afrihost is king now, but what happens when the special ends? Its going to be a pretty average ISP, no?

G-Connect is second every time, but let me tell you why they win.

Completely unshaped,
SAT-3 int.,
GREAT for int. gaming,
Pre-paid,
Funds never expire,
Per megabyte billing,
Service,
Service,
Service.

Especially for me being a student, it is very nice to be able to just top up my account with R5 and play Call of Duty for a whole day. Money is very tight for students, but G-Connect makes it very convenient and affordable.

Kudos to Afrihost for giving us R29 per gig. But the way I use my ADSL, G-Connect takes the cake. (The cake is not a lie ;))

Add to all the above that you have 1 account with which you can use 3G, ADSL, and WiFi, just with different per megabyte pricing.

O.K G-Connect I want my sucking-up-free-R100 now please! lol just kidding.

I dont understand the the R239 for 5GIG from Telkom. I recently enquired about getting 5GIG from telkom and it was R554. Less the R413 for line rental, you basically paying R141 for 5GIG, and this is not a limited offer either. You can buy top ups anywhere, so I do not see that coming into the equation, one could always just buy the cheapest top up.

it seems afrihost is the best at the moment, looks like by cutting out the local bandwidth you save?

If I ripped you off because I owned the lines, due to getting the tax payer to pay for my infrastucture and then slapped on a ADSL service fee too, I also can undercut any other ISP. Telkom is a thief, not a saint.

Yip, that's R28.20 per GB AND you get 30GB local on top of that.

That said, please support Afrihost. This will allow them to bring the standard price close to the R29/GB, after the limited time offer expires.

Good point, volume. If everybody use them they can negotiate brilliant rates with IS, and that in turn means they can reduce their end cost. :D

Ive already switched. Using 5GB from AfriHost. I dont know if I need more.. kind of want to get more in case the special ends but probably not worth buying more than I need atm

That is the key thing. Those 5GB standalone from Telkom cost more than R250 iirc.

But you still have to pay line rental no matter where you get your standalone gigs, so I see this as a fixed cost regardless of where you get your gigs, unless I am misunderstanding how this whole ADSL costing works :p - its becoming like the cell phone airtime industry. :D

Ya, all spin and obfuscation from the monopoly as usual.

How much is the 384k option? And what does it get you?

Point 1 - you need to rent a line from SOMEONE...
Point 2 - if you go with a telkom DO 3 offering, you get your bandwidth cheaper.

I have DO level 3 and as much as I hate to admit it, I get my first 5Gb International cheaper than Afrihost - at R27.x per gig. I ALSO get 30gb local with that.
My next 5-10Gb comes from Afrihost.
When my first 5Gb is up, I do traffic splitting on the router.
