ADSL Price Comparison

Hehe! I, like many others here, just help where we can, since Gian may not be on the forum continuously. :D

No problem - help is appreciated - just glad I got it while it lasted :)

Were you able to contact Gian?

Didn't bother - I bought a 10GB, don't really want to hassle with changing accounts after 5GB :p

I submitted a support ticket that they cancel the 5GB in 30-days...

So this month I have 10GB + 5GB + 3GB (Telkom)... haven't had this sorta bandwidth in about five years.

have to give a month notice for a all-in-one type account, so I'm still deciding what to do. (can't affor to pay double for Internet)

I'm leaning towards Telkom Do 3 (4MB line with 5GB International and 30MB local), and extra 10GB from Afrihost.

If Telkom Internet can offer prices lower than most of the cheaper ISPs, then why can't they?

And if the answer is that they are selling it to themselves at a better rate, or in a different way then other ISPs, the those ISPs should take the matter to the Competitions Commision...... the politics in the country is right for those type of cases to succeed.

cybersmart's Terms of Service fits my impression of the company...
(sorry... i could only handle so many stupid cybersmart radio ads!)

People have been spending money forever to take telkom to task and only when it becomes necessary from a PR POV does the guavamint / ICASA listen. I have the setup you suggest and am very happy. Once my do3 is fin, I do 2 sessions and split local/international with my router.

Telkom Line Cost Crazy

I still do NOT understand why such an uproar is made on the per Gig cost of internet while our LINES are the majority of the costs.

+R500 for a 4Mb line is crazy!

Telkom, work on that first, then look at your per Gig Costs!

And then we care whether it is R30 or R40 per Gig! You can buy 10 Gig for the monthly line rental!

Interesting to see that the only price drops that we are seeing is on ADSL where Telkom has the monopoly. There are however no price drops on 3G/HSDPA.

Therefore, yet again, Telkom is getting all the business.

I will rather stick with the more expensive 3G/HSDPA prices for now, until they come down, than sponsoring the Telkom ADSL trap.

Well said. I'm going to help some lady install adsl soon, but its for her business and if there is any alternative to adsl I would reccomend it to her asap.

But what type of modem/router should I get? Which packages are reasonably priced and wouldn't have too bad international latencies.

Question: Why does MTN 3g/Hsdpa only have 270Milisecond Ping internationally while Telscum ADSL subscribers usually have over 400Milisecond Ping from international servers?

Which ISP provides decent pings not only locally but internationally too, does Verizon sell data too?

Orly?

You must be aware that the ANC(goverment) has been involved in every step of Telkom's Rape of the Consumer.

What would make the politics right for something of this nature to succeed? I don't think it could..

My best recommendation at this stage is not to lock/commit yourself into any sort of contract at any of the ISP's until such time the pricing structures has been stabilized. Remember, once you have a contract with an ISP it's always(obviously) easy to upgrade, but not so easy to downgrade on your package. I have tried on my cellphone package, but my SP refuses. They say I must cancel my contract and then re-apply for a new, cheaper, better structured, one.

At the moment I switch between Vodacom and MTN pre-paid 3G/HSDPA and I have found the 2GB package priced at R389-00 to be the best structured. In terms of speed I must say that Vodacom is definetly faster than MTN in my area. It might differ from area to area.

Trust that will help:)

Compare apples with apples.

I'm with Cybersmart who charge R185/3Gig (512Kbs). Add R25/month for nightrider and that effectively converts your cap to 15Gigs which equates to R14/Gig. Assuming that you use 1 gig during normal hours that effectively still leaves you with 11Gig/month @ R19/Gig.

Ultimately I guess it's horses for courses as I download primarily off-peak and usually get at least 13Gig/month.

Anyone know when Cybersmart is going to up their cap for the same price. I saw it on one of the other threads and their dev server but am still waiting. I also see that they've only applied the 5Gig uplift to the 4Mbps offering now. Previously it was for all line-speeds if I remember correctly.

Personally I think it's pointless to compare butchered packages (after hours etc.) with regular packages. For general pricing I don't think they're worth a mention since they don't drive the market - at least I would hate for them to... we would get nowhere.
