ADSL problems frustrate users

Sunspots is fine explanation but as someone said only should explain int traffic slow down, however, it does also suggest that all int traffic (or a large portion from Telkom and I$) is via sattelite. not terrible in itself but pretty rubbish for comms and gaming. Just a thought...

Back on now, very fast. Are we maybe on time sharing now? So tomorrow I must argue with a techie again......

It could be the sunspot thing! I got an IS account!

I mean some sites work fine! ZBoard site works great, google times out?
MSN Messenger works fine, WoW and Guild Wars go great, it's just some sites are HORIBBLEY slow! When google times out, you know you have issues, there's like a 5kb pic on the page and that's all!

But when I connect through MTN, Google, she works! Not too fast but it does work, but that's jus good ol slow gprs!

Dunno why Telkom ADSL would be slow though!

Hiya All,

From my experience with IS ADSL is that its always sunspots or weather conditions or something making the international slower. All except their IS over fiber at a whopping fat price is run over satellite.

Telkom however has supposedly always given us bandwidth over the SAT3 cable .....
I am in Fish Hoek on a 1mbps now 4mbps line. Its been syncing at 4096k down, 384k up. So its not a problem with the line. However I am on average getting lower than 512kbps speeds on it ... I used to actually get about 100kb/s downloads when it was still 1mbps. Now I am on a saix shaped 10gb account via web africa. Let me not even start on WA and their support/billing problems .. except for the good prices there is nothing else great. Anyway I digress. On local I get between 1mbps and 4mbps .. always 4mbps with telkoms test server. but since noone else has a server with net like that its not a true reflection. Internationally things have been much slower ... I seldom go over 60kb/s now on downloads ....
On the shaped account I always find it way way slower during the day than at night. I have recently started using the tcpiq tool to graph my net. you can see it here http://www.tcpiq.com/tcpIQ/LineSpee...ountryId=196&ConnectionId=19224&UserId=216788

On average I am getting
Download speed 332.96 KBits/sec
Upload speed 294.09 KBits/sec
Latency 645.00 mSec 646.00 mSec

Now that is miles from 4mbps, like 1/10 of the speed. How come service providers can still legally get away with false advertising on technicalies ?
On other notes telkom forces shaped users through their transparent proxy which from that moment onwards has a lame net connection. If I manage to download a file thats actually in the cache (like the latest firefox) then I get about 400kb/s download ... otherwise for everything else you lucky to get more than 30kb/s.

Anyway .. thats my rambling ... I am not impressed with the 4mbps line so far as its slower than when it was 1mbps ... its a telscum contention ration issue. Thats why they dont want to comply and tell what the REAL contention ratio is.

Regards,

Steed.

i fail to understand what is going on here. the speedtest is useless cause everyone i do says "WOW YOU HAVE A BLAZING FAST 3.5MB THATS LIKE FASTER THAN NORMAL DSL WOOHOO!!!" but if i download a file im lucky if i get above 50k/s. i feel thay my 1MB DSL which USED to be capable of downloading at 100k/s is now been "upgraded" to a 384 connecton. and yes i have tested various download points, local and non local. i think the speed tests are just stuck in a proxy somewhere set to say "WOW THATS BLAZING QUICK 4MB YOU HAVE THERE" just so the people who dont know any better dont say anything. so to end my rant - this upgrade is unfact a downgrade, id rather be on 1mb DSL where i actually get 1mb than be on 4mb DSL where i feel like im on a 384 connection. Thanks for listening. (connected on 1MB "upgraded" to 4MB from Jacobs - Durban - S.A)

Glitch in Telkom's 4Mbps!!!

Hi Guys,

I am on DSL 1024 and started experiencing major problems in speed on the 1st September. After 2 weeks and 7 hours on the phone to Telkom, a VERY switched on technician arrived to look into the problem.

He divulged that since the switch to 4Mbps on 1st September complaints are starting to pour in by people experiencing RIDICULOUSLY slow line speeds. He said, that him and a couple of other technicians have been looking into it and have been told (unofficially) that there is a major glitch in the 4Mbps service causing it to deliver an unstable and erratic service. If people on the 1024 package who are experiencing these speed issues watch their routers they will also notice that it loses sync at frequent intervals. The intervals are short enough to fall within the network timeout, so you won't actually get "disconnected" as such, but if you send mail or load a page, all activity will stop until the modem is in sync again.

My complaint is this:

This is a Telkom TRIAL and all DSL 1024 users have become guinea pigs at their own expense. Who is going to compensate us for the loss of service that we are currently experiencing, that we are having to pay for, whilst Telkom merrily TEST their faulty product!

This is not accpeptable.

I have taken this to the papers and to Carte Blanche.

If anyone is experiencing this drop in speed and is on any of the DSL 1024 packages, please would they send me a mail and let me know, what speeds they are getting, if their service is intermittent and when they notived it for the first time.

Thanks,
Emma.

On my 4Mbps line sometimes Google doesn't even load until I click the link again.

I don't mind if Telkom is finding the weak areas and upgrading them during their trial, because in the long run we will all benefit. However, if they drop us back to 1Mbps and claim the trail was a failure I will be really ticked off

IS's sunspot story is crap. They are overselling their accounts. I've got the following e-mail from Imagine when I complained:
Hi >>>

Internet Solutions have outgrown there news server/ ftp server and are in the
process of upgrading the system. Please be patient as they do not yet have an ETA.

Regards

It's also *amazing* that *only* IS is affected by sunspots... They're not the only one using satellites, and frankly, they're not the only one using the one specific satellite.

There's a mere 3 or 4 satellites that SA uses (PAS7 the most common), and sunspots only happens once (maybe 3 times) a year, and it affects *everyone* that uses the affected satellite.... Not only IS.

I stoped buying their crap a looong time ago already... IS will never see me on their network.

listen seriously people, give telkom a break.

a year ago we all had 512k lines, and there were about 50000 subscribers, this equals to telkom needing 25gbps to give everybody full speed connections, now most of us have 4mbps connections and there is say 100000 people with adsl, this means they now need 400gbps. give them a break if you can now not watch your porn or get the "latest" on the freaking news before everybody else. either way you propably still have a faster connection than the oke that is still on 512k so whats the real issue here? something to moan about? do you always have to have something to moan about otherwise life may just seem to be a bit to boring cause nothing worthwile happen in your own life?

give telkom a break, we have gone from 512k top speed to 4mbps top speed in a short time at the same price basically, so stop complaining!!

then maby its your ISP?

listen seriously people, give telkom a break.

Telkom deserve absolutely ZERO break. They are a dishonest monopoly that fleeces the SA public in order to make superprofits, and leaves our country floundering in the afterbirth of the digital age. Stuff them.
