Hi,

I have gone through five routers in three months,

-Billion W40
-Netgear N150
-Netgear N300
-2x Billion N73X

All have happened during lightning storms, the lightning seems to strike the telkom line and travel to router (not sure if it's possible) but no damage has been done to my pc. Does anyone know of a good phone line-lightning protector ? I'm gonna cry if my new router gets struck

I lost 6 modems in the last year & my NIC on my pc got fried, so I've resorted to using cheap D-link 2500u modems (R200 a pop) as surge protectors to isolate my router & I connect my pc wirelessly.

Thor has the hots for my little koppie .. :o

gave up ages ago on lighting protection.

These days we disconnect router during thunder. (leave power, but dc telephone jack), and during rainy season DC when we go out or asleep.

Served us well, router is lasting 2+ years

Joburgs dry winters, leave it connected 24/7

Its inconvenient but ya

Hi There,
I am with Waynehooper on the clearline products. I have had good experiences with them. I don't have the luxury of being able to disconnect when not at home and you should have some protection.

Unlike Wayne though I did get a strike 2 years ago that took out the protection (that's its job) but it was such a big one it jumped from the wall and fried the Mega 105wr router, meandered along a LAn cable and took out a nic on a motherboard. Not nice but without the protection could I believe have been much worse.

Regards
Tim

It depends

A direct hit on the property will usually take out everything, including melting of the electrical wires inside the conduits and blowing up things such as circuit breakers, electronic power meters usually get destroyed spectacularly. Sometimes its even enough to blow the element in your water heater.

I have seen direct hits and their effects, usually very terminal. Often in a case like that the Telkom line is melted all the way to the DP and usually beyond, affecting sometimes tens of customers.

Often watch the lightning hit sparks of the koppie 300 odd meters away, with out and lightning damage, but the local municipal power utility once cost me 3 out of 5 computers ... , retards ...
