ADSL - SA versus Morocco

Not that I *want* to play devil's advocate here; but laying a high-capacity cable between Morocco and the major Internet hub which is Europe is not exactly as daunting a task as laying one from South Africa. The Straits of Gibraltar are like 15km wide :p

Compare that with Seacom which is going to be like 13,700km

In fact, their internet seems to be unjustifiably expensive (considering the distance), just like ours.

just another article (again) showing telkom incompetent idiotic attitude towards the masses

I wish somebody who could actually do something about it would read this...I hate complaining to the unimportant masses (like me), who all complain but can't do anything...

Yup just strap it to the back of one of the illegal immigrants and ask them to connect it when they get to the other side.

That still does not justify the local situation!

Thank you, I want to see more and more comparisons and maybe a video interview with Telskum being taken apart!

I like how the price of Telkoms ADSL services never include the price of the voice component. I think I'll write to the ASA because that monthly charge is compulsory so it should bloody well appear somewhere nearby.

nelwa, I feel the same way, but we are just not voicing our concerns with the rigt people and we are not doing it in large enough numbers.

I think the ASA should be approached, when you quote a price it has to include VAT, and considering that the telephone is a compulsory fee it should be included in the price and the comparison!

I don't see two lines coming into my house anyway!

My letter will be off to them in a while.

20Mbs uncapped 1k - Morrocco
384k uncapped 1k - S.A

Somewhere... somehow... something... went HORRIBLY WRONG!?

where do you see 384 uncapped?

i see 384 uncapped throttled at 20 gb's down to 128 or something

we do not have true uncapped in this country

remember allyoucaneat's uncapped 30 gb accounts

htf can uncapped if your only allowed 30 gb's

Nothing justifies the local situation, of course.

I'm merely pointing out that Morocco's telcos have less of an excuse to do what Telkom is doing here. Telkom's excuse being that all they have is SAT-3/SAFE and that it needs to be managed tightly (bull) because putting in another 14000km submarine cable would take aaaaaaages (true).

Our friends up north only have to go 15km. Less of an expense for them (obviously). Less time to plan for and get additional capacity up and running. We had a 15 man team on my last project installing 40km of cable in a month.

You can't really compare their situation with ours just because Morocco is on the African continent.

I'd pay R1000 a month for 20Mps uncapped internet. I'll most likely have to buy an extra hard drive every month too, But that's ok.

I just wish the world could come together and start slapping these cables all over the show.

The internet should be FREE by 2010 man! *wishful thinking, but ya, I'm ambitious*

As has been said already, it's clear that international bandwidth to Morocco is a far simpler and less expensive exercise than it is to South Africa. Morocco is basically a part of Europe, and is lobbying to join the EU. Their standards are being brought in line with those of the EU so that they have more of a chance of being accepted. Comparing us with Morocco, without stating the facts of their geography and what that means to the subject you are writing about, is blatantly misleading and quite frankly a waste of time to read.

There is no need to be one sided - clearly our telecoms sector is laughably inadequate, and the whining by these "reporters", I think, does more harm than good.

In Morrocco - Uncapped 128k = R129 per month

In South Africa - ISDN 128K (with Infinitcall) - R11031.32 per month (without Infinitcall R26447.4)

SA = ZIM2.0

more of what we know already.

Didn't myadsl publish that article last year or something very similar.

I'm going to stop visiting myadsl.co.za, since they just keep telling us all the same things over and over and over. WE KNOW OUR BROADBAND SUCKS A$$. Thanks for reminding us.

How about you DO SOMETHING instead of just telling us stuff we already know.

err and what are you doing besides looking for a klap:mad: Don't critisize this place. There are many forumites that do a hellava job trying to change the system and I thank them for that otherwise we wouldn't have a forum:D???
