ADSL Service

Just one note to remember:

(256 / 8) * 90% = 28.8KB/s Upstream!

Correct me if I am wrong here, but the maximum a single person can get is 28.8KB/s international!

Also, if you'd like use of a capped ADSL account, I'd be willing to supply one for testing purposes. Please PM me.

From experience, it seems that Telkom doesn't seem to limit the upload speed correctly. So it is possible that you are getting the full 512kbps upload on G.Lite. That would explain the 34KB/s I got in tests yesterday (taking into account my account download speed restriction, and contention on the line).

.

If I was capped (I'm not yet) the speeds I got yesterday would be awesome, but I think it is a bit difficult to judge without the line being fully contended. To be honest, if I could get 10KB/s consistently on international after being capped, the R100 per month is well worth it.

I'm not a big user of p2p etc. I would just need reasonable speed for browsing, mail and occasional FTP after capping. Unfortunately your service might just attract the big leechers, in which case the service would degrade...Could be an idea to get more "abusive" testers live at the same time to check.

<edit> I'm not at home at the moment...and my connection is downloading some iso s to crack the cap. When I get home I should be capped, I'll disconnect and reconnect to confirm capping and then use the proxy as a test.

afr9999, I hear your opinion about the big leechers. Its somethig I am not very worried about, since there is port prioritization in place. Standard ports such as 80, 443, 25, 21/20, 110, 143 are all heavily prioritized and assigned the highest bursting ratio.

Ok how about this setup, anyone who reads this:, herewith are the test account details! Try it out, account expires on the 31st of March!

Proxy: proxy-gate.nebular.za.net
Port: 3128
User: [email protected]
Pass: @69QzbJFt2

Give it a try and post your findings here.

ok thx,

but now to unveil my super newbieness!!

how do you do this setup?

where do you configure what?

I'm on a network behind my marconi/adsl router

:)

Hi Louisp.

You do it in Internet Explorer.

Open Internet Explorer.

Click Tools -> Internet Options

Then click the Connections tab

Click the Lan Settings Button

Under Proxy settings, tick the "User proxy settings for your LAN" and then full in the details.

Hope this helps!

Yup thx,

figured it out...

the user name and password confused me, but it only asks u that once you try to browse...

Ps. International sites don't want to open via the proxy?

:)

Just tried it out myself, int sites seems pretty fast, don't know how many users are on it though? Downloaded two random files from international sites - averaged about 40kb/s. Will test more tonight.

Azrael. Thanks for testing the service.

Anyone else who is testing this service, please reply on how good or bad the service is and any ideas, recommendations, suggestions or flames are welcome!

Thanks

If you wish, please email me at [email protected]

Hmm dont spose this is possible with Sentech? I tried to enter the details but theres no username and pass entry.. ?

Hi Razor0. Yes it is possible using any service provider, however its more aimed at the ADSL folks (as the proxy is on an ADSL line).

Just enter the details into Internet Explorer. When you try to browse the internet, it will ask you for a username and password.

Thanks for this service. Just wondering though, is this allowed because I heard that logging into proxies is illegal if the owner doesn't know about it. Do you own this or do we have permission? Sorry to ask but I just don't want to leech off someone unfairly.

Huh, all of a sudden I can't get into any sites with this proxy turned on. What's going on?

Just tried it again...

Pretty fast by my standards!!

But, apparently I'm not yet capped, there was just a connection problem or something at my exchange. Trying to get capped today, so that I can fully test it tomorrow.

Thanks for test account!!

:)

Hi ilash, i can assure it is not illegal. I own this proxy and I am selling its service. Please read the thread in regads to how this service works. That account is just a test, and it will expire end of tomorrow (31st March).
