ADSL speed claims approved

I wonder if the other ISPs will have a go at getting the same testing done?
 
Just hope iBurst doesn't try the same stunt - they will be in for a surprise... (Happy that Telkom is doing this, hopefully it will increase the access speeds competition)
 
This ruling was a result of a competitor complaint from Vodacom against Telkom.

Ha! That's rich (Vodacom complaining that Telkom doesn't live up to its claims). Does anyone even get close to 3.6Mbps that Vodacom apparently offers? I get ~3.4Mbps on my DSL 4Mbps. I think that's pretty darn good (and close enough). Bring on the "DSL up to 8Mbps" :D
 
I wonder how much that report cost them, I mean, us?
All rather silly if you ask me.
 
Wonder when "DSL up to 8192kbps" claims will be made..... :D

As per the thread in my signature, if you are using SAIX shaped on your 4Mbps, you are wasting that extra bandwidth (capacity). I would HIGHLY recommend you try out IS Fibre Semi-shaped (get a prepaid GB from Axxess). I'll admit I rarely get 4Mbps speeds internationally, but it is far, far faster than the international speeds I get using SAIX shaped. Latency is also better.

You haven't experienced DSL 4Mbps until you have given IS Fibre Semi-shaped a try, IMHO. SAIX is pathetic.
 
don't do to many speed test, you 3GB will all be gone....

who gives a rats all about speed if you cant use it.....


Here have a Ferrari, but u can only use 1litre of petrol a week..... :(

Fair point. However, why have a Ferrari that you don't take to the track at all? Would you rather let it sit in your garage all the time and stare at it? ;)

I can second this suggestion. I was sick and tired of buffering youtube videos and unwatchable DailyShow clips. I bought 1GB semi-shaped. After 7pm, videos stream at 90KB/sec+ on 4Mbps DSL. It makes online videos a pleasure to watch! On SAIX shaped, my videos are stuck at around 32-40KB/sec, which is too slow to watch smoothly.

PS: Hurry up SEACOM!

But what about latency? Do you guys game? Aparently the IS bandwidth has a lot higher latency than SAIX ('cos it's satellite) making especially faster paced games like FPS play badly on the net.

Anyone have experiences either way?

Also, I was thinking of giving IS a go, I don't understand their shaping policy, is the Axxess semi-shaped just following IS normal shaping schedule, or is it special?
 
Dont get me started on latency.

I got a 384k line and use WA shaped, not sure if its SAIX or IS. All I do know is that since January, latency is worse on an almost daily basis. January I averaged pings in the high 400- low 500 range to international servers. Now im lucky if I get under 800.

This gets even worse if I'm off and try to play during the week. its sodding horrible. And before anyone tries to say its WA's fault, it isnt. its fairly and squarely Telkom and the DoC to blame. sorry but WA does the best with what they got.

I do not game, so I cannot comment on whether it is any good for that. Not all IS bandwidth is high-latency (i.e. international via satellite). The IS Fibre Semi-shaped is called such because it has international connectivity via fibre (just like SAIX does). This is a different product to the satellite-connectivity products (such as the Uncapped Express accounts, if I recall correctly)

I believe all ISPs that offer a so-called "semi-shaped" product are utilising the IS Fibre Semi-shaped offering, because SAIX is either shaped or it's not (there is no middle ground). So, yes, Axxess's shaping policy will mirror that of IS' because it is IS' Fibre-based semi-shaped product that they are reselling after all.
 
fortunately Telkom know better than to use claims like "value for money" and "fair price" in their advertising otherwise they would really be up the crack! :D
 
Telkom shaves 15-20% off almost every ADSL line, real world results prove it.

A fancy pants report doesn't prove a thing - go to the average user's house and try a multithreaded download - it won't reach full speed, that's guaranteed.
