Hi folks

AS part of this year’s broadband survey we need a few tests using the “Line Speed Meter” It will be great if you can install the Line Speed Meter, run a few tests and post your results URL.

Can you also please say which DSL connection you have (DSL 384/512/4 Mbps) and which account you have (SAIX shaped, SAIX unshaped, IS standard, Verizon etc)

Download URL: http://www.tcpiq.com/tcpIQ/LineSpeed/Download/

The more tests the better, but even if you can just run one or two tests it will help tremendously.

Just for good measure we will throw in two MP3 players for two lucky testers :D

Regards,

RPM

Huh.. what's up with the 38KB/s on 4mb? The download is slower than the upload... is this normal at all with international content?

Thanks a bunch so far! Any DSL 512 users out there? And maybe some IS guys?

Yeah, this is totally messed up, always happens on international speed tests for me

Local ones I get the right type of results, but I get really confused how we only manage like 35 - 50kbps download on int. speed tests.

For all you Linux users that need .net. This seems to run a java implementation of .net stuff.

I don't know if this will work but maybe give it a shot :)

I will edit this post when I get home to test my DSL.

EDIT:

Download: 179.99KBits/sec 22.50Kbytes/sec
Upload: 115.44KBits/sec 14.43Kbytes/sec

Webafrica prepaid SAIX based DSL - 384/128.

If any major difference from more testing in future I will edit again. :)

My results on 4096/384 telkominternet:

Some comments:
  • The first 5 tests kept showing upload speed as 0 although the actual test result displayed on my computer averaged about 345KBits/sec
  • After uninstalling and reloading the upload speed appears on my results.
  • Per the FAQ:
Why is my upload speed set at 0Kbits/sec?
Some firewall software can cause problems with the Line Speed Meter. In particular Norton's Internet Security caches outgoing data. This means that when the Line Speed Meter performs an upload speed test these products first intercept the outgoing data, analyse it and then send it off to the internet. The Line Speed Meter will think you have a faster internet connection then your really have as it will have effectively measured the speed that programs communicate within your computer, rather than the speed of your connection.
We identify this situation and you will be notified to consider whether your firewall was running or not when the test was performed.
If you are running the Line Speed Meter within a corporate environment and you have a LAN-based proxy server (ie a proxy running within your offices) then the proxy server may cache out going data. This is a similar problem as described with Norton's Internet Security except the Line Speed Meter will be measuring the speed of your LAN.
When the results are posted to our servers, our algorithms will identify this situation, discard the upload results (while retaining the download speed results) and will record '0' for your upload speed.
  • Enabling a proxy server "dsl-cache.saix.net" improved the download speeds but decreased the upload speeds as can be seen on the two tests at 10:27 and 10:40

i still maintain there is something that telkom does. for the most part single threads seem to top out at 50kB/s - 60kB/s. In fact even when I download with multiple threads I can tell that each is topping out somewhere in that range.
