But isn't line rental used for this? Those R152 are just admin cost for ADSL part so if we want to be honest for coper maintenance Telkom gets R122+R133 in there pocket (line + 386 rental EX VAT)

You are also forgetting that every line needs back haul on the exchange. This also needs to get factored into the price.

As an aside, surely Telkom should be motivated to get more people using more data, as they charge the ISPs for the data usage. If the cost of 384 and 4 meg is the same to them, then surely it would be in their interest to get the majority of users onto a faster line and using more data at the same cost. This statement is based on my assumption that people on a faster line are more likely to use more data as more services become available to them, I could be wrong though. I know my data usage jump significantly after making the move to 1 meg (probably as I no longer have to wait for youtube to buffer ;)). Although Telkom might have done these calculations and found out that ripping off the minority with higher 4 meg rental is more profitable.

Maintaining the copper might be the same, backhaul to the exchange isn't the same though.
 
Yippee, looking forward to my 2 Mbps line in a few weeks :D I suspect that a lot of 4 Mbps users who can't sync at 4 meg will be downgrading.
 
I can't see why they would up 384 to 1Mb....3X as much bandwidth...
i'm still betting they will move 384 to 512...
moving it to 1Mb will just see all the current 1Mb guys moving to the 384 pricing...

1Mb is good enough for gaming/downloading...well anything except HD youtube stuff.
 
i will be happy to pay R50 more to get 2mbps but more than R50 i will just go with the normal 1mbps then IF that happens

i hope they get better service also,cuz holding for 2 houres and then they cant even help you,its just f..ked

ya 360/480 on a 1mbps is fine (youtube)
and gaming ping is good
i wont mind getting lower than +-220
wonder what a 2mbps will be 150??

International ping doesn't improve with line speed. Unless you can find a way to exceed the speed of light.
 
The MSANs will allow for much higher DSL speeds which may well mean speed upgrades for 4Mbps and 10Mbps ADSL users in selected areas.

Lets hope Telkom does actually upgrade 384 to 1mbps and 1mbps to 2mbps all for free.

In the article, it said KT suggested flat rated ADSL for the maximum speed you can get. I this even a good suggestion or what?
 
Wait, where do this KT lot come in? I mean, don't get me wrong, I like their suggestion, just wondering what they have to do with Hellkom.

Also, you 384k guys don't need to worry. They upgraded you from 192 (eventually) didn't they. You'll get your upgrade. Probably even to 1meg.

This is only true if you are not using up all available bandwidth (up/down). It is no longer about distance but about the queue.

Have you been living in a cave? :p There's plenty of articles here mentioning that the upgrades will commence from August for everybody.
