ADSL won't connect on Ubuntu...help needed!

Hi all,
I am new to Ubuntu and am having a problem with my ADSL connection. The network seems to be working fine as data has been sent successfully. Though I cannot connect to the internet. I have entered in my username and password under the dsl tab the same as i have on my mac and can't figure out where or what to do next? Where is a 'connect' button or the like? Are there any known issues regarding this? Ill post and info needed, just ask.

click on the network icon in the corner and then adsl coonection .... well thats how my 3G connects.
 
Haven't used the DSL tab, but I do it as follows:
First, open a terminal and type 'sudo pppoeconf' without the quotes. Then follow all the prompts. Make sure you enable using peer DNS and the defaultroute option. When the prompts end, you can start your connection using 'sudo pon dsl-provider'. dsl-provider is the default name given to the connection. You can rename /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider to anything you like using 'sudo mv /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider /etc/ppp/peers/new-name'. Then you can start the connection using 'sudo pon new-name'. You can stop the connection using 'sudo poff new-name'. If you'd like to set up multiple accounts, remember to rename them as you create them, as an existing dsl-provider file will be overwritten. If you'd like to set up multiple pppoe connections to run concurrently and route local and international traffic separately, you should search the forum for the guide written about this by Paul S.

How did you managed to finish installation without internet connection? What Ubuntu did when install failed to locate repositories? (Curios to know never witnessed that.) What version of Ubuntu it is?
Where is dsl tab? Is it in some menu?
How did you find out that you are not connected to internet?
Is that Hellkom ADSL?
We need more info to try to find out what may be the problem.
 
My ubuntu installations never require a working Internet connection.

The DSL tab is under the new network manager.
 
How it behaves in live session, can it connect to internet?
If you are talking about System -> Administration -> Network there is no DSL tab.
I see you are talking about Ubuntu 8.10. It should pick up Helkom router on eth0.

it picked up the network as I said...has recieved some info from lo???as well as I think it was pan0 and eth0.
But the problem is actually connecting to the internet from the network. It all seems quite simple, go to I think it was (sorry not at the ubuntu pc) network configuration, dsl, new, entered username, password...clicked okay. Now either that is wrong, or it isn't even trying to connect.

As sn3rd said, I did do the sudo pppoeconf, and followed the promts. It said it was unsuccessful. I also typed in the code to connect to the internet, and it repeatedly posted weird lines of random symbols and didn't stop untill I closed the window. Though still no connection.

It should find Hellkom router without problems on eth0. If you are using something else let us know. I guess DSL story messed up everything - I would delete entry if there is Auto eth0 in the first tab. Is router working? Try with live session or connect diferent PC to it.
BTW is that famous Ubuntu on macbook?

1) Is your router set up for tunneling pppoe connections?
2) What router is it? There are a couple routers that are incapable of modem mode.
3) Have you used pppoe 'dial up' accounts successfully before?
4) What IP address are you being assigned? It could be that your router's DHCP server is disabled or functioning incorrectly.
5) Using pppoeconf, where does the error occur? If it says unable to find access concentrator it could mean a number of things: you don't have a working connection to the router (are you able to ping it or access it's web configuration, if it has one?), there is a cabling issue on your side, there is an issue at the DSLAM.

Try and list the things you've tried and post the output error messages you receive (if any). This will help us help you ;)
 
I will get back to answering the above questions when I sit down with it again...but maybe it will help to say that a computer running Vista worked in the same place before, and their is a mac and an XP machine also on the same network. So there shouldn't be any problem with the router or anything else to do with hardware. It is as if I took my mac from the other room and plugged it in there, it would work I am pretty sure of it.
 
That does help, somewhat. Assuming the Vista machine and the Mac are both making the PPPoE connections, then making the connection from Linux should be dead easy.

As I mentioned before, the next step would be to ascertain whether or not the connection from the Linux machine to the router is solid. If your router has a web interface, then attempting to use it is a good way to check for this local connectivity.
 
what does sudo ifconfig return? Ar eyou connecting via ethernet or wifi?
 
ethernet. It returns very random symbols...ie %§~&~*~~^~~@ type of thing...I will more than willingly paste the real thing. Wish it made sense to me though.

Tried more today to get it to work. All three networks (pan0, eth0 and lo) are sending and receiving...not much data, but there is movement.

Do any special details need to be given in order to connect an ADSL modem? Ie. Mac Address (I used the one it gave me).
