The first day the SNO offers an ADSL product, I dont care how much it is. I will personally walk into my local Telkom shop and hand in my cancellation of service and while they are entering it into their computer I will be doing a dance of joy and singing at the top of my voice.

Maybe someone with more skill than me can suggest some lyrics. I can always play a song on my cell phone while I dance.
You might be in for a surprize! I cancelled my ADSL subscription after signing up with a local WISP and it took me 5 faxes, endless calls to Telkom and 2 fury-loaded visits to the local Telkom office before they got it done. Time: 13 working days.
Strange how eager Telkom was when I signed up for a line and ADSL (everything done telephonically), yet cancelling the service was made as inconvenient as possible, with Telkom simply denying receiving ANY correspondance. The same woman at the Telkom office even forgot our face to face argument after 3 days!!

So, you paid for 826MB and didn't use it! :(

Sounds gr8! But, IBIWISI... and the price should be right as well, otherwise they can forget getting me as a customer!

yeah :( i don't mind under utilization cause cybersmart is nearly as cheap as dial up this was partly cause of saix issues last week of the month. i should have 85% if it weren't for their monthly month end issues.. due to that this month i don't have enough bandwidth. short by about 300MB which would have been used last month  usually i use about 85-95% when downloading stuff and 75% when not(but brother goes a but mad downloading)

Maybe we should arrange a few people toy-toying as they cancel their ADSL. And make sure the media is present. Telkom cant exactly deny getting the cancellation after it is aired everywhere. But then again Telkom have been known to do much worse. Wont hold my breath then.

I am still going to enoy it in every grain of my body. I tingle in anticipation of this event.

I can see it All in my Crystal Ball.
24 Mb/sec to the DSLAM, all the way down to Melkbosstrand, where it is handed from the SNO to the International Operator, and then ... SOS (Same Old Sh..)

SNO and India

I have just returned from a business trip to Inida. During my trip I witnessed a farmer in a rural area accessing the Internet using VSAT with much better connection speeds than what I get using iBurst.

In Delhi I also witnessed Internet connection speeds comparable with the best that I have seen in Europe. In other words much better that the rubbish that we have here.

So hopefully with the Tata group's involvement with SNO we can get something similar.

Well you say 24Mbps but in SA that is not realistic. to achieve true 24Mbps speeds to need to be with in 1Km from the DSLAM. South Africa is not like the UK where there entire population and country can fit into Natal and the only place that offers ADSL2 is central London. I think that if we do get ADSL2 they will offer speeds lower than 8Mbps. I stand corrected here but that is how I have always viewed it.

here is a basic view of ADSL2 speeds as taken from BeThere website
The actual bandwidth that you will receive is based on three factors: the length of the wire that connects your premises with the BT exchange, the quality of the copper, and signal interference from other users or devices. If the quality of the copper is perfect, and there is no line noise, you will receive 24 megs up to a kilometre from the exchange. If your line is two kilometres long then you can expect to receive up to 15 megs. Your bandwidth will decrease further as line length increases, and we do not offer our service if you are further than 5.5 kilometres from the exchange. While bandwidths are not guaranteed, we do offer the highest bandwidth available using ADSL2+ to your premises.

When you can use the full ADSL2 features in SA (+8MB Speeds) living next door to a DSLAM, Wimax will have ruled anyway

Remember, a prolifferation of DSLAM's will not be immune to the Cable theft issue.

I hear some rural areas are using Fibre with its sheathing stripped off as Thatching for the traditional round hut roofs.

Must look way out in the morning sun, If I was tourist, I would want to see this.

IMO, knowing that our citizen-driven Govt. already has a 30% (?) share in the SNO.. this seems like a rather distant prospect!

i'm tired of being optimistic, i gave up long ago :(

I think this is daydreaming. Facts: The last mile/ten mile belongs to Telkom. Look at your ADSL modem at the back. There is a suffix: annex A. Further Telkom has installed inferior cabel for I dont no how long. Staff from Telkom has many times informed me that we only has 'speechcircuits' and this are not made for data. The dialup 56K is limited by Telkom on the transfer speed between 2.4 and 2.9 kb/sec real speed. This is not a shortterm experience. I has 4 years and 11 months batteled with this institution. At the end whas a cancellation of everything from telkom. This is the only way to get them thinking. No mony no work. So no mony from me.

A max exodus from telkom is the only way. once their profits start to dwindle, they will start to reconsider that 5 - 10 year price fixing agreement them and the SNO (along with our beloved cell networks) happily signed..

That ain't gonna happen with no alternatives, people can't give up communication, it's a basic need. Would we stop buying water to decrease prices? No, we'd die.

Ok, so turn the trick around. We have teklom at the moment, and yeah, prices are steep, and service sucks! But, if the SNO doesn't want to fight a price war, let's all ignore them, till they are forced to lower prices. I mean, if they're going to invest a lot of money here, and they get no customers, they will lower prices to try and recover their costs...
