steam is quickly getting me away from piracy. I see no downside to it (except for prices still being tied to the strong dollar). Sales are very cheap got me witcher 3 a month ago for around R300. Also you get the latest updates as they come out (patching pirate games is a hassle) you also get some free DLC with some games too

Steam means my games are all legit now, no more pirates life for me either. It's just easy and sale make it cheaper to pick up good games. I just got Metal Gear V for 50% off. Now for the ~30 gig download.
Yeah. I have no idea though coz I haven't actually seen the machine. I've also broken the bad news to her that the account is essentially dead for all Valve games.
I will sit with her one day and help her sort out her machine. She's job hunting at the moment so I don't mind buying her some of her Valve games again.

Mostly ****games being released, Steam being absolutely FLOODED with indie crap, and the sales themselves have been changed for the worse - the best part about them has been removed namely the daily deals and flash sales.

That's a pretty poor excuse. Refund policy should have nothing to do with it.

Do you mean Steam specifically, or just because it's games, which access your games via Steam?
Have had Steam on the same hard drive for 4 years and no issues, touch wood. Latest SeatTools scan shows drive's still healthy too.

Yeah, what would Steam's refund policy have to do with poorer Steam sales?
The Winter Sale seemed pretty good to me overall, although I didn't buy a lot since I had most games I want already.

I guess you don't know how Steam's refund policy works. So let me explain it to you.
If you buy a game that then goes on sale, you can ask for a refund and the difference in price gets refunded to you.
So obviously with daily deals and the likes it will cause massive issues.
Their choice to do it like that. They should only refund what you paid.
Refunds are a tiny thing anyway, flash sales were a much bigger benefit of Steam.

So you'd be perfectly paying R800 for a game today, that's 50% off tomorrow?
Doing it this way is very pro-consumer of Steam. This way no one feels cheated buying a game a few days early.
Allowing this with Flash sales will just increase transaction fees with no real benefit.
If you were one of those that bought Arkham Knight you'd be very grateful for the new refund policy.
1. Herp. That scenario can happen irrespective of flash sales or not.
2. If you are monumentally stupid enough to pre-purchase or just-after-release-purchase a console port (but really any game these days), you don't deserve your money back. The Nigerian uncle you never heard about that just died and left you 40 000 000 Dollars, yet can't afford a lawyer that knows how to use a spellcheck, is a better investment.
As I understand (from butthurt devs Iron Galaxy Studios, who made the crap Arkham Knight PC port), Valve's commission of a sale is not refunded to publishers. Warner Bros. got a kick up the backside when they saw how much money they were losing to the refund system.
I'm pretty sure the refund system isn't meant to be a means of demoing any game you please. I still consider my purchases very carefully, which has meant I seldom have need for the refund system. I'd prefer not to cost publishers more money than necessary.

Yeah, impulse buys are a big no no, i had a game on my wishlist and it popped on sale and i seen the sale was going to run for 30 hours so i did a little more research and slept on it an bought it the next day.
2 hours is nothing for you to even decide if it's good or not, i think its made for people who aren't smart enough to check the game spec and end up unable to play the game.
