As things need replacement around the house, I try and use something that will allow Smart functionality, to build our smart home piece by piece.

The pool pump timer is a gonner, thus needs to be replaced. What is a good WiFi timer that can be used to program the timer obviously and provide remote connections?

I have seen the Sonoff Wifi Programmable Wireless Smart Switch - On/Off/Timer, but know too little about these things to know if it will work.

So throw any advice this way please

Sonoff Basic? That's what I'm going to use on my water tank pump.

If I were you I'd install a Sonoff POWR2. It does power monitoring and has multiple timers so you can set on/off times. Of course wifi needs to reach your pool. Also, because I want local-only control and am paranoid about security I won't use the standard firmware, so all my Sonoff devices are flashed with Tasmota.

Looked at that one (thanks for the title fix btw :) ) but I don't know if it has timer function
It does. :) It has a generic timer, loop timers and scheduled events.

Ok cool ... will have to check it out then. Do you know if it is a set time per day (like 8am to 4pm), or can you have mulitple different ones throughout the week? (I don't run my pool pump every day for the same amount of time)

I added some bits to my earlier post - it has three different types. A generic countdown timer, a loop timer, and a scheduled events timer. That last one is probably what you want.

I ripped out the old mechanical rotary timer switch and installed a Sonoff POWR2 with Tasmota. Now I can easily set the timers and see what power the pool uses.

I recommend the Shelly 1PM. This will give you the ability to put the pool pump on a timer, to control it remotely and to check the power consumption.

Did this today. DB cover needed a little bit of love to make it all fit, as well as to access the button. IMG_20210305_145057.jpg

The CBI Astute Smart Breaker is the perfect WiFi Smart Switch for a pool pump timer.

Many years ago I installed a simple digital timer switch in the main house's DB board, which fed the pool's DB. After a while, that started losing its mind whenever load shedding happened, so I replaced it with a Sonoff 4CH R2 flashed with Tasmota, which gave me control over the pump, water feature, and RGB pool lights.

I also modded the 4CH to expose a GPIO so that I could monitor a Hall effect flow sensor, so I could see how the pump was struggling - i.e. if the weir basket needed to be emptied. However, that part didn't work out too well - it worked for a while, and then stopped, and it's rather inconvenient to rip the whole thing out to try to debug what is going on!

In theory, the 4CH is somewhat underpowered for a 750W motor, as inrush current could exceed the 10A rating for the relay, but so far so good! It's also all the way out by the pool, so I don't have to worry about it burning down my house! :D

Has anyone ever hooked up the sonoff at the DB? As my pool pump is a bit far from the wifi.

Old thread, but for interest sake.

I removed my Sonoff POW R2 and replaced it with a Shelly 1PM Plus, also added a physical button with LED.
I was getting tired of either having to get out my phone while busy with the pool, or sticking my wet hands into the DB to push the little button on the Sonoff.

Also makes it a lot easier for occasional pool maintenance folk to switch the pump on/off.
