We are looking at changing our old analogue pool pump timer to a WIFI enabled digital timer, but we would like to find one where we can add rain sensors. Reason being is that we installed solar power and would like the pump to switch off to preserve battery power if it starts raining and we are not at home to notice. Has anyone on the forum done this? It looks like some irrigation timers can be programmed to be used on pool pumps? Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

Put this by your pool breaker by the DB
That will at least give you the first steps, the next steps aren't going to be cheap nor easy.
But with the switch at least you can hop on to it anywhere and turn off your pump.
Plus with that you can also see the pool usage

My uncle uses the Shelly 1 PM for his pool pump.
He has it set to only run during sunshine hours and then he manually turns it off when he can see that solar performance is not what he wants. He is the type to check on his solar at least once a day, so manual control is ideal for him.

I mean you could do it relatively easily with homeassistant on a Pi bumping a relay either over gpio pins or another wifi switch. You could even do it without homeassistant with a python loop

You could also use the wifi pool switch as mentioned in the other posts in conjuction with Home Assistant and use an automation based on UV index using 1 of the weather integrations.

So mine is basically, when UV index is above 2 switch on pool motor, when it drops below 2 switch off.
