I would really appreciate some advice from anyone that is in a position to give it. I have been jumping from ISP to ISP thinking each time that it would get better. If I'm here, clearly it has only gotten worse...
I use to be with with Axxess, until they shifted to MTN business. At that point, my uncapped 4 meg line became useless. I then left them for Plugg and was quite satisfied. Both accounts were uncapped
After this, I was out of the ADSL market for about a year. When I returned, I moved in with my boyfriend and we used his @lantic account. Between two of us using it (+- 300 gig a month) the thing became unusable, so we moved over to OpenWeb after some googling. Plugg didn't fare too well in the google exercise (apparently they went down hill), so we avoided them.
Openweb has been nothing short of hell. We have been with them a few days and last night, I lost it (they managed to scare us off in a week). I bought an afrihost capped account to tide us over whilst we plan for a new ISP. With them, I couldn't shake the feeling that, despite it being an uncapped account and Afrihost being an excellent firm (extremely helpful, even at midnight...) that the internet was somehow... slow?
To my dismay, I found out that they are also on this MTN business network.
My dilemma is currently as follows:
We are now moving to a new address and I have arranged for a 10 meg line to be installed there. I am prepared to spend up to R1000 p/m on the ISP. I would thus like to know there exists an ISP that:
1: Will not throttle / shape you too much (if possible not at all, but that may be a dream...) for usage of about 300-400 gig a month
2: Is not based on MTN-business (they just feel... like there are too many people online? I can't explain it...). In fact I would prefer an IS based account.
Typically, we torrent a few things (but not nearly as much as most of the people we know) and we watch a lot of youtube, movies and series online. Both of us also do play online games, so pings do matter. I would like to think we are pretty "standard" users.
If I need to up my price range, I do not mind per se, provided that it is for a genuinely "honest" ISP that I am not going to have a repeat of any of the above nonsense with.
I genuinely do not mind the occasional outage or being shaped/throttled a bit, especially with torrents. But when I get home and I try to watch a few silly cat videos on youtube, after a long day, and all I get is buffering, it does bring out the terrorist instincts in me. Am I asking for too much?
