After many years of not having a desktop gaming system, I am finally ready to bite the bullet and get one again. My question is :

with the GTX 980 Ti and the 1070 being pretty much the same price, which would be better for 1080p gaming?

I have no intention of going the 4k route yet so I am not overly concerned with 4k performance.

If those are the only options then definitely 1070.

This is a no brainer, take the 1070 . It's got more of everything except for the power consumption.

Get the 1070 even though the 980ti is slightly faster. The 1070 runs about 10C cooler, uses 100W less power & OCs well.

Just note that a 1060 will also work great for 1080p gaming.
This.

If you intend on doing 1440p then rather aim for 1070, in my opinion. Or 1080p @ 144hz.

A 1060 will be more than adequate for 1080p @ 60hz, all on ultra.

1060 = 1920x1080 @ 60FPS
1070 = 1920x1080 @ 144FPS
1080 = 2560x1440 @ 144FPS

Slightly off topic but I found it somewhat amusing that MyGaming did an article on GFX cards and 4k gaming and found the 1070 to be the best option...

1070 is NOT a 4k card, so I agree with your statement. I would add that the 1070 is comfortable with 2560x1440 @ 60FPS

Seems like GFX cards have stepped up recently.
For instance my GTX 970 has never been able to play any modern game on Ultra.

I shall definitely be getting the 1070 in the next year or so when I upgrade.

Are you looking for a locked 60fps? If so the 970 should come pretty close at maxing out most games 1080p - might have to knock down a few things like shadows but that won't take much away.

Yeah i generally hate playing games below 60fps. I notice it and it effects Game play although some games like the Witcher 3 could be okay hovering at 50fps.

I was generally talking at setting most games to ultra and i can assure that it takes a lot of tweaking and almost impossible to keep games around 60 fps on a 970.

Hehe, ye Witcher 3 is pretty taxing at ultra settings.

haha I think i had to keep most on High to even get 50 :P

I need a card when i can just select ultra for everything and it stays at 60 fps. Hoping the 1070 can at least do that.
Too lazy to tweak/fiddle these days.

I often just let Nvidia Experience software do it all for me and then tweak if required.

and is it really that impressive looking?

I've been switching back and forth between Witcher 3 and the new Tomb Raider and in a lot of respects I find the graphics better on Tomb Raider, and they are a lot less demanding. Could be something to do with DirectX 12 being used in Tomb Raider??

I find Witcher 3 looks a lot better when you completely turn off that awful sharpening filter, but the character models are no match for ROTTR which is next level awesome.

Talking about DX12, on Tomb Raider I just completely leave it off as parts of the game tank by up to 20 average fps when compared to DX11. Think there may be something wrong with the latest nVidia driver and DX12.

sharpening filter? I'm going to have to find that.... I just watched the intro piece again last night, where they in the room and Geralt is in the bath. The characters just look so stiff and fake.

Then look at ROTTR and how Lara looks while sitting in the camp, you hit ESC and you swear you still in movie mode when you look at her animations. You think its just the GFX engine that is that much better?

Never noticed that to be honest. Will compare the two, but I havent had those drops that you are talking about.

Test it out on your end and let me know if you see the same. Just run the same piece of the game using DX 11 and DX 12 and see the framerate differences. I was shocked when I saw how much worse DX12 was.
