advice on graphics card

Test it out on your end and let me know if you see the same. Just run the same piece of the game using DX 11 and DX 12 and see the framerate differences. I was shocked when I saw how much worse DX12 was.

and in terms of the actual quality/gfx differences when changing to dx11? Will the game look any different at all?

I was under the impression that dx12 gave the devs more to work with in terms of making games look better/more realistic

not so?

More to work with, but also requires more work to utilize.

It's not really a visual thing, the benefits that DX12 (and Vulkan) provide is the ability to work closer to the "metal" and bypass higher level APIs that can impact performance (but make it easier for developers).

Made a short video comparing the two to show the huge FPS difference (DX12 on the left):

Thanks a lot bud!! awesome! :) Would love to know how you actually did that lol

Can you post your settings that you are using please?

holy crap that is a big difference!!! I assume you not running v-sync enable? any reason for that?

Lol, had to figure out which software I needed to get the split screen (Windows movie maker didn't cut it) ended up downloading Hitfilm 4 Express which is actually pretty awesome and that was easy enough to get working. Individual videos captured with ShadowPlay and used the latest MSI Afterburner beta to get the overlay (older versions don't work for DX12).

ok cool, sounds simple enough. Curious to see your settings that is dropping you down to mid 30's

what card do you have again?

No Vsync to show how big the difference gets. No other settings changed except enabling DX12.

everything I read says that DX12 is supposed to give performance GAINS... not freakin LOSSES!

something very wrong has gone wrong along the way, but I have yet to get to the bottom of it

Unless the DX12 is just an afterthought and was horribly implemented...

It's badly implemented in this game because it's basically an appendage instead of it being the framework. When using low-level APIs like DX12 and Vulkan developers really have to go in from the beginning with this in mind and program to its strengths.

I just didn't expect the difference to be so huge which has me wondering if it's not an Nvidia driver issue.

If the performance was on par for DX12, I would consider that to be a poor implementation. That fact that its even worse, well that blows me away... Going to go see what list I can find of games that are literally built from the ground up using DX12

Remember that nvidia is still new to dx12. Even Vulkan is better on AMD.

Nvidia need a lot of work to do for dx12 and Vulkan.

and it seems that there are VERY few dx12 titles out there, and by title I mean a game built from the ground up. I see a few with dx12 support "added" just like ROTTR

Makes little sense to me why they would add it as an after thought...

And again you'll see in those games AMD does better in dx12 than in dx11. It's not the game's fault. It's nvidia's fault.

That's because amds dx11 driver support is bad. They sorted things out with the newer apis and that's the biggest reason for the big change. That said nvidias async compute implementation is nothing to write home about either and I doubt we will see big gains in that department until the next arch revision.
