advice on graphics card

Solved my DX12 performance issue - ROTTR is running into a memory limit on the 6GB 1060 when using Very High textures on DX12 and it's taking a massive hit. Setting textures to high fixed the issue (or just leaving it on Very High and using DX11).

This idea that a 1060 will 'comfortably' max out games at 1080p is quite misguided. It's basically a gtx980 in Pascal form. I have a 1070 and while I max out FC4 for instance there are plenty of frame dips; same with ROTTR, and Deus Ex:MD I haven't tried but I'm pretty sure it will flatten my GPU. You want to get the best card you can get.

As for 1070 vs 980ti, I had both and I really can't tell a difference. They're essentially the same card, give or take. If the ti is cheaper, like say R6-6500, get it. Otherwise the TDP difference and heat management makes the 1070 a better bet. My 980ti Lightning had 3 power pins versus 1 in the 1070.

Regarding ROTTR, I'm running a 1070 and get solid 60fps on 1440p. You shouldnt be getting dips on 1080p

Everything on MAX, except for Purehair set to ON, and AA set to FXAA

Um let me check that....

Ok DX11 benchmark @ 2560x1080 with those settings gives 57.8fps. So yeah, I guess I hadn't played it since getting the new card. But FC4 does dip.

nice. I assume you are overclocking your card then? By quite some margin it would seem!!

I haven't touched the OC at all. That's how Boost 3.0 works; it always seeks the highest possible level and you'll frequently see higher real clocks than indicated on the box.

MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Armor X Overclocking:
The MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Armor X comes with a factory overclocks and utilizes NVIDIA’s GPU Boost 3.0 tech that allows per voltage point clock adjustment. This allows the GPU to boost beyond its stock configuration. In our case, the card was supposed to clock in at boost speeds of 1747 MHz but in all titles, it feature boost clock beyond 1900 MHz (1924.00 MHz to be precise). This gives the card a lot of advantage in terms of performance at stock configurations depending how much cool the card is running and based on its total power consumption which needs to be lower to avoid thermal or power throttling.

I think a lot of the cards out there boost to 1924MHz out of the box, my 1060 does the same.

that is a great feature to look forward to so the cards automatically overclock at a safe level dependent on cooling and voltage etc?

Yeah, but you can OC further. It's a silicon lottery though. And basically all Pascal cards are limited at ~2100mhz, regardless of temps or voltages.
