Advice on purchasing a Porsche

991 is the latest model or shape.

How old are your kids? The seats in a 911 is not what I will call 'comfortable' for larger kids and or adults. For a quick trip down to the mall or so its fine but not for extended driving.

When buying a Porsche, and or similar, the purchase price is usually the least of your worries. Maintenance is a big one especially things like tires. Can easily set you back anything from R20,000 to R35,000 per set depending on what you buy. Porsche does have a tire program but the prices for the right tires are still high.

Insurance is another thing.

Check the Autotrader or check their website (Porsche) for 2nd hand vehicles. There are some very good ones with sub 10,000 kilometers on the clock to be had for a good price.

Insurance on these isn't as bad as one might think. If you do get into a fender bender, it's seriously big bucks which will probably adversely affect your premiums.
 
Why do you care about carting kids around in your sports car? It's a car for you. Keep the family car around if everybody needs to go somewhere together...

In the older 911s they weren't useful at all - not even for the mall!
 
I've tried the Cayman and was not impressed. Seriously, try a few of them. You might find you actually prefer the Cayenne, which is what I fell in love with. Some of the 2nd hand models also come with extended warranties to 200,000km if you purchase them through Porsche directly.
 
I dont think the rear seats are useful unless you are under 5 feet tall and your kids have had their legs amputated.
That said the 911 shape is probably the one to go for if you always wanted a Porsche.

Oh yes I drove the Cayenne and love it,the way it delivers the power is almost super car like,surprises you when you first drive it expecting a SUV like feel.Brilliant car and one I will hopefully buy soonish...hows the maintenance costs on them though?

That big engine tone also is something,sigh.:love:

Kids are 7 & 12. Wife is shorter than the 12 year old already!
It will be for the quick trip only.
The 2 seater options seem a little selfish for now.

I'm already paying 20k for run flats on my 5 series so that's not new.

I'm not sure that for a used model one will be paying for extras you didn't need in the first place.

An SUV is not what I dreamed of as a kid.
Porsche had to succumb to market trends but the Cayenne and Panamera are not true sports cars.
 
I have not read the entire thread... A 911 even though it has back seats, you can't really consider those back seats, your kids will struggle (unless you willing to cut their legs off) ... Maintenance wise... A carrera gts 2011 model minor service would costs around R4k... Insurance about R2k with a specialist insurer...(Hollard has such products ) Resale wise and keeping it's value, you can't get better than a 911. Id recommend a 997.2 carrera s PDK... Or if the budget doesn't allow get a 997.1 carrera s.... These cars are super reliable, so don't stress too much about things breaking... I don't particularly fancy the 996 and it was a bit of a let down. Good investment Porsche is a 993... They only going up in value

Things that do wear quickly is the clutch. Before buying one get Porsche to do a quality check on the car and get then to hook it up to the computer to see how hard the car was driven

If I go for a carerra it would not likely be the s.
What's the difference between 997.1 and 997.2?
 
The 997.2 was the facelift that came out in 2009. Had the drl, led lights at the back. Also had the nice touch screen as standard. But the bigger difference was the move from a 3.6l motor to a 3.8l motor and a pdk double clutch gearbox.... I still strongly recommend the s... Around the r650k to r700k you can find a clean s

What will the mileage be expected at that age?

Which is the model after 997.2 and what were the changes and price point?
I could stretch to 950k
