Advice picking a new car

Yeah man I wouldn't touch a golf in SA due to exactly that reason. I didn't exactly feel happy driving the Hilux through Mthatha either, but what can you do. There's no real issue with car theft up here in the arctic. People leave their cars running while they go into shops etc.

Yeah the Kia C'eed seemed like a bigger car that wasn't all together awful. The Rio's a bit small, but drove ok. Maybe the i30? I like the i20, you know it's plastic, but it's a lot of car for its price. Used to be my fav rental.

Significant downgrade on aesthetic appeal and Fit and finish IMO. The Kias and Hyundais are good cars(and now they have great warranties as well) They just don't feel as well made as Ford/VW to me
 
Get a Hyundai accent 1.6 gls 91 kW 137 Nm. More than enough pull to handle overtaking. I have had mine for 4 years now and it hasn't given me a single issue currently on 85 000 km. Also very cheap to maintain in terms of tyres.

The i30 doesn't look bad, quite a bit more plasticy and not as well designed as the i20. The bigger issue is it's price though

I heard from the salesman on Sat that the Accent Hatch is being discontinued and they're trying to get rid of them. A slight concern tbh

Before my golf I've only ever had Corsas around the R75-R100k mark. I honestly feel like there's a void in the market between your corsas and your class C behicles like the Audis, especially in the 2nd hand area. Maybe I'm missing something.

That said, car prices here are around 60% more expensive for the same model in SA, so I can't really gauge what cars fall in your affordability bracket.

Kinda makes sense why Polos are so popular.

R220K in my max but would love something decent below this

R200K would be fantastic

I spent a good few months with one, and genuinely miss it. It's an incredibly competent, comfortable drive for what it is - essentially a scooter with a roof. The 3-cylinder engine is a little uneven at tickover, but it's very willing and happy to rev, and fuel consumption is as good as one would hope. It had to cart my then less than a year old son and all his ancillaries around, which it managed surprisingly well; you can fit a lot more into that boot than you'd think.

All said, I'll happily buy one as a second car in a year or three's time - 9 days out of 10 you don't need any more car than the up! offers.

Thanks very much for the insight. I'll definitely go test one out this weekend. How are the finishes compared to the polo?

It started to dawn on me today what do I really need in a car especially not planning on having kids etc. Also do I really need to spend ¼ of a million on a car that essentially just gets me to work and back. So I'm going to try and look at the smaller (and cheaper) cars. Again (quite obvious I know) with these smaller cars not only will I save on monthly repayments but insurance and fuel too.

I've been driving a Renault Sandero for the past week (hired car) and to be honest it feels nippier than both the 92kw Fiesta and the 74kw i20 and closer to my Polo. I wouldn't want to buy one (the design and finishes aren't great at all). I don't need huge amounts of power but enough to feel safe overtaking and enough to know that I can accelerate if need be. One of my other "main" nice to haves is Bluetooth for calls and music and from what I've seen 90% of cars these days have it as standard.

Our up!s (man, that's awkward) come off the VW line in Slovakia, which is also where our Touaregs are assembled. The fit and finish is of a very high standard. My time was also spent with one of the first ones that landed on our shores, and I believe the current models have higher quality materials on the inside.

Do keep in mind that the car really wasn't ever envisioned as a highway cruiser. It's able to cruise at 130km/h but not much more, and overtaking isn't breathtaking. It's capable, but does feel a little out of sorts at highway speeds. Not with regards to ride and handling, but it could do with a bit more oomph. In town it's a different story, as your first three gears are short enough to make the run to urban speed limits surprisingly sprightly. You'll run a real risk of racking up urban speeding fines quickly if you don't watch the dials in town.

Hahaha classic. That's great to hear on the quality side of things. I guess that's where a large bit of "piece of mind" lives for me, knowing that it's a VW and the quality associated with it.

Thanks for the info on the highway speeds etc. unfortunately it does cast a little bit of doubt in my mind, but I won't know until I've given it a test drive.

Are there any other options in this class? I was looking on the web and came across the Kia Picanto 1.2 which seems to have a bit more oomph on paper 65kw / 120Nm. There is also the Kia Rio 1.4 (79kw / 135Nm). Tbh I haven't ever driven (or been) in a Kia so am a bit skeptical on the quality, but will too give it a go. I really didn't like the look of the Hyundai i10 so that's out of the picture. The Opel Adam is interesting but getting a bit pricey, I guess the Corsa is always an option, but it seems that Opel doesn't offer any internal maintenance plans but instead uses 3rd party insurance companies instead. The Mazda 2 could of been an option but I'm concerned with support in the country. There seem to be so few dealers around. Not sure on the new Figo, I haven't seen one in the flesh yet...
