Advice

It's not THAT bad. Compared to other rentals I've driven its fine. Try a spark. Then you will know :P

That's like saying Gonorrhea isn't THAT bad compared to AIDS. It is bad, they're both bad, and you don't want to have either.

Etios is a kuk buy. OP's friend from high-school is swak for charging him that OTR.

What car do you drive daily?

E90 320d.

I've had a Polo vivo sedan, Fiesta and i20 as rentals as well, these are cars i would recommend over any etios.

Would stay away from the Old yaris sedan as well, had that as a rental, felt as bad as the etios.

I'm curious, we were considering a new car sub R140k, and the Etios sedan seemed like the best of the (not so great) lot. What's better in that price bracket?

A Polo Vivo 1.4 Zest is under R 140k and about 1000% better than an Etios!

Looking at the sedan range - I'm pretty sure you could do that after a discount on a 1.4 sedan as well.

Etios!! No man.

Did you even do any research???
Ford Figo
Hyundai i20
Opel Corsa
Kia Rio
Toyota Corolla

even a Polo Vivo is a better option!

all around R130k, all less than 20 000 km.

Yeah, the Polo Vivo was in a different quality class, but once you add things which are standard on most other cars (ABS, Radio/CD, Central Locking, service plan) you are over R150k.

In the end we decided there wasn't anything worth buying new for R140k.

Don't buy new. It's stupid anyway.

OK, well you then answered yourself on that one - you are crazy to buy a new Etios, rather a decent used Polo....or anything....for 140 k rather than the Etios!

I think you have confused Jano with Gdiza, Oom Fazda! :p

So I test drove the Etios and yes, I didn't like it based on the fact that it was all plasticy, so I'm looking at a Polo Vivo now.

So a bit of an update for those interested;

Okay, so I found out (to my shock) that I still owe something like R55,000± on my car (I thought It would be way less) but be it as it may...

Toyota are giving me R33,000 for my car (which is more than I expected, but due to the condition of my car, they were happy to assist) and I have about R12,000 (which I was hoping to use as a deposit) but it didn't work out like that, so basically to clear things up, I needed R11,000, suffice to say, moer long story short.

Toyota (or at least, Wayne Castle the sales consultant) has been super patient and explained everything to me, and helped me where possible (as far as I can see) so ultimately, I'll be getting the car on Monday and my repayments will be R2,700'ish - my insurance will be going up by R100.

Very nice learning experience - Originally when I bought the Clio from Car Rama in Wynberg, the lady who sold me the car was / probably still is, the worst sales consultant ever - by wanting to buy the car, I thought she was going to kill me, but this time around, I've had much more of a learning experience and learnt a bit about how things work.

The car is a 2012 Polo Vivo 1.6 Trendline with 28,000km on the clock, Bluetooth, C/L and is really in a great condition.

When you think about it, all I really want the car is for 'space' and I'm going from repayments of R1,400 to R2,700. Joh! :)
