My current PC:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ s939
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo
1GB DDR400 Kingston RAM
Geforce 6800GT
1x160GB + 1x500GB Seagate SATAs

My PC is starting to slow down quite a bit.

Should I just add more RAM or shell out a bit more money and change the mobo, CPU and the RAM?

I wanna move from XP to Vista, I don't game on PC and I multitask a LOT.

Advice?

First your ADSL line goes, now this:(

Your pc sounds faster than mine, how is it slowing down?

In my opinion I would rather just sell out and get a new PC 2.5-3k these days get's a pretty nice PC :) Since finding cheap DDR400 ram is going to be a little hard

Well my ADSL is back up working normally (touch wood) so now it's just my PC that needs attention. :)

I have a very strong feeling that my HDD is crapping out on me, that's my educated guess on why it's slowing down.

What's my current rig worth? (excluding the HDDs that is)

Well I've joined the working class so nowadays I'm dead tired after work. Also, I'm not as active on the forums (and the internet in general) during the day but trust me, I always do my research even after asking for advice on an internet forum. ;)

I need to maybe set aside some time this weekend to read some hardware reviews but I just wanted to get an idea what to lok at frst from you okes.

Yup resyncing issues and 512k speeds on a 4Mb line = teh suck.

So, how much would a new mobo, 4GB RAM, a decent CPU and a quiet PSU set me back?

My reccomendation is a:
Q6600 B3/G0 stepping
Gigabyte P35 DS3 board
4GB DDR2 800 Ram
And a good aftercooler for the CPU :)

Depends how much cash you have to spare.
My Q6600 is running 3.6Ghz, Ram at 900Mhz.

I'm running UT3 (alt tabbed out of the game) in the background, Opera with 20 Tabs, Flashget, Foxit PDF Reader,Media Player Classic, and Photoshop CS3 running. And CPU usage is under 40%! :)
So go quad core

Cool, BTW I do not plan to overclock at all.

What would that rig cost me now? Sorry guys, I'm too dog tired to google anything right now. :D

Of the top of my head, Cost prices:
R2000 for the Chip
Around R1000 for the Mobo
And R700 for the Ram.
If you not gonna overclock, you can go for a cheaper mobo.

What slot type is the GFX? AGP/PCI?

If its PCI-E then I'd say upgrade GFX and add a stick of RAM. If its AGP, then a complete upgrade is on the cards.

I'd say forget about the Vista thing....my PC feels sluggish on Vista even though its got a decent amount of horsepower.

dont bother upgrading the gfx unless you are sure its...

oh wait i read 8600GT hehe, but still it is very unlikely that it is the bottleneck on that system...

It's AGP .

I don't wanna buy a new graphics card because I don't game on PC. I want a mobo that has onboard graphics that's capable of handling Aero.

Nah, I doubt the graphics card is causing the sluggishness.

It's like my PC is indexing something for 5 minutes when I boot it up and during that time it's dog slow. Even afterwards, it's not as snappy as it used to be.

I think you mean 6800GT, which is a 6 series Card unlike the 8600GT which is a 8 series card :p as far as I can remember Skt 939 did not have PCIe support [could be wrong]

Feo, some input from my side.

Have you eve thought of getting a laptop (or do you have one?)

If you're not going to game on it, then I'd suggest checking out the Telkom Laptop specials, but I'm typing this as if I know you own a laptop, how would I know that, unless I read it here ;) :D :p

Nah, you're 100% correct.

That's wrong unfortunately, just a few meters from me is a Socket 939 AMD running a 6600 Gigabyte PCIE.

I have a laptop yes but it's a work laptop so it's got limited rights so I can't really install all the stuff I want onto it.

Oooops, my bad. Before they stopped production of 939s they must've slipped in a couple of mobos that supported PCIe.

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum mobo - AGP 8x
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=587

your mobo must have been made after PCIe was launched :)
