Afrihost 4Mb Uncapped - Please don't bother

1.) I purchased a 4Mb uncapped account just before the R1 special... Bugger! :cry:

2.) I have used the account for about 7 days out of 15, mostly after hours. Only downloaded about 53Gb in this time, but on Wednesday I noticed my speed was drastically reduced. At first I though it was just a network problem but after 2 days I knew something was up. After checking the speed I was getting 30Kbps on a 4Meg line! After contacting Afrihost they notified me that I was a high downloader on their network and therefore I had been capped, and they would review my account when there was bandwidth available. When I argued that there shouldn't be network congestion after-hours they pretty much just said that's how it is and I could move to their IS account if its a really big problem... gee I wonder... 500 f&*^ing Rand for a sub 384k uncapped line!

Is there no one downloading more than 50Gb a month on their Afrihost uncapped accounts that they believe this is high usage?
 
If you read the t's and c's you would see if you use a 4 mb uncapped account you will be shaped if you are within the top 50% of bandwirh usage. This is over a 10 day moving period.

You say you only used it for 7 days and downloaded 53gb. Thats more than 7 Gb per day. Of course the gonna shape your line.
 
Was actually 18Gb over the last 10 days, so 1.8Gb a day with a 4Mb line is too much...?!? What do they expect?

When I had an uncapped 384Kb line with Openweb I asked for download stats and they said they don't keep download stats because it's uncapped... that's how it should be.
 
Afrhost uncapped is an obvious no-no. Mweb is the second best, but not great. Openweb gold+ uncapped I hear is the best.
 
in your OP you say "7 out of 15" "downloaded about 53Gb in this time", but then you go and say over last 10 days you did 18Gb. which is it?

also if my calculations are correct: if you did 18Gb in last 10 days which leaves 5 days, 53-18=35 and in 5 days that would put it at 7Gb per day. (some1 check my calculations pls)

it again brings us back to the fact that people percieve "uncapped" as a "now I can go and download the internet" account.
all of us wish that this could become possible, but as things are now it won't happen anytime soon.

sadly and even though I am a customer of theirs on a capped package, I would not recommend their uncapped.
Mweb has it's issues yes, but at the fact that I have so far done between 150 and 250Gigs per month, I am more than happy to recommend them.
also as Gimaru mentions, Openweb has also seen some good 'reviews' and I know a few guys that are with them and no complaints.

all in all, you "got the bad end of the stick"? and it is sad to see, but all you can do now is either switch to a fixed cap account or switch ISP.
 
I'm on the Afrihost 1024 Uncapped option.

I know the limitations and also knew them before I signed up.

I'm very happy with my account.... as I do not download the InterWebz!

As of today I have DL'd 29Gb at an average of 1.8Gb/day and I still have Full Access as per the IS Account Information.

Completely agree, I have the Axxess Uncapped 1024 version of this IS account which I only use at night, it's great value for money.

I've done an average of 3.8Gb per day (up/down combined) since I got the account in mid-May and have always had full access.
 
MWeb uncapped service is by far the best. Downloaded 60 gigs before month end and wasnt throttled. Mweb wont throttle
 
I downloaded 35Gb in 3 days (steam games) and then didn't use the account for a few days. But if you take a rolling 10 day period where I was throttled it worked out to 18Gb, 1.8Gb per day.

Clearly my interpretation of the t&c's are different from most of you. If some of you think 50Gb in 15 days is downloading the internet the ISP's have done their jobs... If I really wanted to download the internet I could have downloaded nearly 10 times what I did in 15 days using the account 24/7. That would be abuse!

If you're happy to pay R500 for an uncapped account with these limitations, go for it

I'm happy enough, R326 for 1Mb uncapped delivering at < R3/Gb meets my downloading requirements & my capped accounts deliver the speed I need for work related tasks :)

Seems to me you have "champagne" internet tastes on a "beer" budget :D
 
Dude just get the IS basic uncapped lite account for R418 per month or you can buy it on a 1month basis.

You might be like OMG. I can give you speedtest now showing I still get 420KB/s download on torrents as we speak now. Weekends this account is unrestricted irrespective of the usage. Ok so during office hours I'm slowed to about 50-80KB/s download but for what I paid for the account and what I get is worth the shaping.

IS uncaped is the best uncapped for the price of R418 you can ever get.

Ive came to noticed that the Afrihost's "uncapped account" is the same as a their R400+ "capped account" being like able to download like 40GB a month, then being throttled too death for the rest of the month, being declared a high user. I was very disappointed when I tried out their "uncapped account" that time to find out by "uncapped" they actually meant unlimited surfing after being throttled.

Dont use Afrihost uncapped if you plan to be a downloading junkie.. their more for surfing as to bulk downloading

i'm on afrihost 4mb and they moved me over to IS, still quite happy with them
 
They do review what you download, told me that when I signed up for uncapped
