Afrihost 4mb Uncapped RAGE Trial

BF3 latency on local servers and Guild Wars 2 latency on EU servers seem to be much higher than they were before.

I have noticed this too. Some servers also have a ping kicker on and I get the message - Kicked by Admin: Sorry, players from N/A are not allowed on this server.

I have a feeling the ping kicker is because of the 105.xxx.xxx.xxx ip's but i am getting a 60ms ping to cpt servers, and 30 to jnb. So the routing is definitely an issue.

Could not connect to the steam network.

This is really an issue now.

Update:
So I restart and still no luck. Now Flash update won't even download.

I put on my Openweb account and everything works.

Not good hey.

Our guys are busy tinkering with the priority to give maximum blend of browsing, Voip and downloads (torrent or nntp). There may be a few hiccups while they change things around, but we need you guys to keep giving us feedback on what you're experiencing.

Please send me a PM and please also put your username in the message, that way I can forward it to our team of developers and engineers and they can check from their end.

Your help is truly appreciated :)

Rage Uncapped Experience and Questions

Ok, so I've been using a Rage 4MB/s Uncapped test account since 7 October 2012. My main account is an Afrihost Capped account which I've stuck with because of my nightmare experience with Afrihost Uncapped previously. I'm on a 10MB/s line.

Initially everything was happy days. I got full speeds (3.9MBit/s or 500KB/s) using a variety of protocols (no BitTorrent - the bulk of data moved was via FTP). That was until I reached 80GB. Everything slowed down dramatically. FTP downloads (multiple threads) slowed down to sub 1MBit/s (around 111KB/s). Using other protocols I sometimes still managed to reach 400-500KB/s for short periods, but looking at my Network Meter speed graph, I could clearly see how I was being throttled. AfriMan, I take it 80GB is your current threshold?

 The most disappointing and frustrating issues I experienced after the throttling started, was my inability to even connect to Steam (even with all downloads stopped)... it just didn't connect. Reverting to my capped account quickly remedied the issue. This is a major problem - why is it happening!? I was also unable to watch SD Youtube videos, playback would pause for rebuffering every few seconds! Speedtest.net tests do not work after throttling started. The test would go about halfway, before aborting with an error (speeds jumps around erratically between 1 and 3 MBit/s initially).

AfriMan, in addition to the above, please clarify the following for me. Once you've moved over to the MTN infrastructure:
  • What will the threshold be where throttling kicks in (for 4 and 10 MBit/s respectively)?
  • Will there be clear rules as to how throttling / shaping will be done?
  • Axxess sent out a newsletter explaining how users will be in control of throttling via a new tool that is going to be released - anything similar planned for Afrihost?

It will take a lot of convincing from Afrihost before I dare to venture out into the troubled waters of Uncapped bandwidth again...

Thanks!

Now that my university tests/work have stopped for the time being, I'll have time to do some proper testing for you, Afriman. Looking to have speedtests and a point-form write-up of different protocols I used during the day which will be posted sometime every night (hopefully).

Note: 2mbps line

Uploads hover around the 30-50kbps mark but usually closer to the higher end. Downloads are usually around the 185-200kbps mark but today have been a little lower as can be seen in the picture.

P2P:

Steam:

Not the greatest/most consistent download rate, but it has been getting the job done.

Depending on whether I can get the BF3 update tonight from my friend or not, I will do some game testing on this account later.

BF3 is an absolute no go on this account. After about 30 minutes of persistence I managed to get MW2 to connect to IWnet (MW3 wouldn't connect at all). After much waiting I was finally connected to a game but the stuttering made it completely unplayable.

Everything else is still great, though. 200KBps

I see a few guys battling with game servers (BF3, Steam, Xbox Live or PSN)

Can you guys please PM me more details, like which game server's you are battling to get onto and if there is any detail like an IP address that we can recreate this on our side.

Please drop me a PM (with your username) and we'll look into this immediately.

:)

So...got an email today. They're killing it tomorrow. Good run though, I'm considering getting a 2Mbps uncapped package from them. If only they had some better deals on the 1Mbps and 2Mbps packages. Uncapped DSL is still way too expensive in SA..
