Rage Uncapped Experience and Questions
Ok, so I've been using a Rage 4MB/s Uncapped test account since 7 October 2012. My main account is an Afrihost Capped account which I've stuck with because of my nightmare experience with Afrihost Uncapped previously. I'm on a 10MB/s line.
Initially everything was happy days. I got full speeds (3.9MBit/s or 500KB/s) using a variety of protocols (no BitTorrent - the bulk of data moved was via FTP).
That was until I reached 80GB. Everything slowed down dramatically. FTP downloads (multiple threads) slowed down to sub 1MBit/s (around 111KB/s). Using other protocols I sometimes still managed to reach 400-500KB/s for short periods, but looking at my Network Meter speed graph, I could clearly see how I was being throttled. AfriMan, I take it 80GB is your current threshold?

The most disappointing and frustrating issues I experienced after the throttling started, was my
inability to even connect to Steam (even with all downloads stopped)... it just didn't connect. Reverting to my capped account quickly remedied the issue. This is a major problem - why is it happening!? I was also unable to watch SD
Youtube videos, playback would pause for rebuffering every few seconds!
Speedtest.net tests do not work after throttling started. The test would go about halfway, before aborting with an error (speeds jumps around erratically between 1 and 3 MBit/s initially).
AfriMan, in addition to the above, please clarify the following for me. Once you've moved over to the MTN infrastructure:
- What will the threshold be where throttling kicks in (for 4 and 10 MBit/s respectively)?
- Will there be clear rules as to how throttling / shaping will be done?
- Axxess sent out a newsletter explaining how users will be in control of throttling via a new tool that is going to be released - anything similar planned for Afrihost?
It will take a lot of convincing from Afrihost before I dare to venture out into the troubled waters of Uncapped bandwidth again...
Thanks!
