Afrihost and international speed issues

Just got some feedback from our Engineers. Seems the whole of Afrihost's accounts are under heavy load (MTN) - Capped, Home Uncapped, Business Uncapped. IS is running @ full speed though.

is it possible to load balance between the 2?

Our Northern Region is quite busy, better than yesterday though! Not all clients are being affected, but we're still pinning down the details to have no clients affected by this.

That's what we have noticed from the data sets. ;)

Sort out soon or 6 weeks?
The last time Afrihost increased their IPC it took 4 months before it was done so the outlook doesn't look too rosy. I'm not saying they are planning to increase their IPC in the Northern region as I'm still reading denial in the words of both Afriman and Afriguy. Words like: spikes, today, we hope, currently doesn't add comfort that they want to admit there's a general problem with capacity. I will give them this coming month to get their ducks in a row and after that if the message hasn't changed I won't continue my support. Hopefully we won't have to go through all the stages of Kubler Ross before this is resolved.

I had a little wobble when downloading a file. It settled after that.

What's strange about that?

Still have strange latency though but throughput is fine.
What's strange was you didn't mention it. Your message seemed as though you had no problems but you had a problem just before you posted that message.

If you have a latency problem then your throughput can't be fine as throughput is a function of latency. If your definition of throughput is your speed achieved on your download (aggregate throughput) and your latency is high then you have multiple connections to that server.

It hasn't quite been 4 months, and we do have some options in the pipelines that our Management team are considering :)

I'm sure Hush posted what he did for his reasons, lets play nice please guys :)

Sure is. The more Info we can provide them, the better. I do hope so. Most of us don't have the time to sit all day and test/diagnosed the source problems. We can only provide them with details to an extend, then it's up to them to put/enforce pressure onto their Engineers. We all do hope so ;)

either way u guys can see there is a problem and u working on it.

So i appreciate the help!

Just keep us posted where u can

Look here. Go through the posts in the Business thread then you will see that I had great speeds despite the latency issues yesterday. It was only last night when the latency was introduced from the Telkom end that I suffered.

I was streaming Netflix in better than DVD quality and Hulu in 720p despite erratic latency. Surely you aren't telling me that I multiple connections to the streaming server...

For the past 3 days I have been having bad latency to London. It was usually around 180 - 190 ms. Its now around 260 ms and hasn't really dropped.

I do pay games on the EU severs. So my only concern at the moment is my ping.

If your location is indeed the mountain of awesome then you shouldn't see any issues :)
Please PM me a bit more info and I'll have this checked out.

Okay point taken. I'm not here to fight I only pointed out something that I perceived as an inconsistency. You don't perceive it as inconsistency, can we agree to disagree?

You may be getting good speeds, so count yourself lucky, not sure how that works. It doesn't seem that your experience is shared by many other users of Afrihost in the Northern Region. The figures that you mentioned requires roughly about a 3.5 Mb/s so depending on your package that could be great if you're on the 4 Mb/s package (getting 87%) or not so great if you're on a 10 Mb/s (getting 35%).

I just thought as to why latency would not have an adverse effect on video streaming experience. Within a certain threshold for the latency and depending on the window size of the packets you could still have sufficient time for the packets to reach your device before it's needed to avoid extra buffering.

Here is an international speedtest from Business Uncapped account.

Hush, use speedtest.net and test a number of different international servers because giving us a single test from a single server isn't sufficient enough proof of things working fine. As Afrihost have told me, test over a few days and then report back.

I've been dealing with this issue since the beginning of May. If it's taken you 6 months to recognise that there's a problem, how long is it going to take to fix it?
