Afrihost and international speed issues

Oh, BTW, Afrihost... What's up with your latency to (some/many) European servers these days? About a month ago some of your routing went completely haywire, and it was never again fixed. Here's an example:

Notice how it takes you 375ms to get to London. That's roughly 200ms more than normal, and it makes (my) games completely unplayable.

I have the same problem. Pings are terrible.

Also, on the alternative ideas for when you want more than 40kb/s I also had to get another account from another ISP just to get decent speeds when I need it. I'm contemplating moving my business' accounts and my personal account from Afrihost to someone else, but at the moment it is much more "better the devil you know."

I'd love to AfriGuy, but I have been playing "send me your account details" tag, with you guys via twitter, email and phone calls for the past 3-4 weeks. The consensus is, either the line is being shaped (when it's not), the NZB isn't cached (which it is) or old (which it isn't), the torrent is not shared (which it is since it's a private torrent from my work) or it's the exchange/line (which it's not since I get full speeds on all other ISP's), my ping is high because of network traffic or any other issues on my side, but hey, I'll send it to you anyways.

I'll follow up with our team on Twitter, but I still need your details :(
Just replied to your PM too.

That's fine, I replied to your PM.

Please just don't let another techie phone me and talk to me like I'm an idiot and say "do you know what shaping is?" or "have you tried not using your internet during work hours."

Thanks for all the help though, I feel sorry for you having to deal with the crap part of it :/

(I think you should ask for a raise tbh.)

I'm in the exact same boat as you, except I get even lower speeds than you do. Local speeds are fine (when Afrihost aren't throttling me to 6.5%), but international speeds are always completely useless. This problem has persisted for me at least since June-July, and at this point I doubt it will ever be resolved. In the end I've decided to just say '**** it' and come up with a couple of alternative solutions for when I need more than 40kB/s on international downloads.

Please also send through a private message, I'd like to have a look at your account for you.
The traceroute you've posted looks really strange, like it's missing a hop on the MTN network between leaving SA and hitting the UK.

We really want to sort this out, not treat you like an idiot. If our specialist team do request information like traceroutes, MTR reports and such please provide it to them. They're the best guys in the business and will most definitely have this sorted out for you.

We're seeing a spike in demand at the moment, which is causing these higher latencies. I'll follow up on your PM and investigate a bit deeper.

In that case your 'spike in demand' has lasted about a month now...

No, our spike in demand when I posted is isolated to today.
I've got your PM and will follow up as soon as I possibly can on why your individual latencies aren't up to scratch :(

In that case your spike in demand is irrelevant to this problem, as it has persisted for about a month.

I forgot to mention earlier that I also had a 150gb capped account that also has the same latency and ping issues. So for me it wasn't isolated to 1 Afrihost product.

They simply dont have the bandwith.

Coming from a afrihost business account that performed sub par (slow international downlaods 99% of the time) being on a capped 150GB account now, things have not changed much. Running a 8meg line.

Streaming works great on 240p.
International http downloads run blazingly fast at 60-180kb/sec
Local speeds are up to par, well, 30% of the time > This has been going on for days now http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3052197823
Pings and traceroutes show no sign of congestion.
Afrihost online chat never works
Afrihost support staff keeps on sending me their "copy and paste" answers. Its like they never even read the entire email.

So over it. Afrihost, just admit it already, you DO NOT HAVE THE CAPACITY and are overselling to a stupid degree.

We don't feel the same way. We don't have the resources we would like, but the upsurge in demand (not signups) was unprecedented and unpredictable. We have some of the smartest people in Afrihost and MTN reviewing and analysing the network on a continous basis, and I think if it was something obvious we would have all shouted "Eureka" at the same time.

The onset was sudden, and hard to diagnose at first. As soon as we recognised that demand had gone beyond what we have planned for, solutions we presented and those that could and can be implemented in the short term are being put in place. Other long term options are simply not possible without the proper planning and turnaround from Telkom and MTN. However we believe we still can offer a good experience on our DSL, and this issue will be behind us shortly. We've been in this situation once or twice over the years (unfortunately) and we've always come out well in favour of our clients.

AfriMan I'll stick with Afrihost for a while still. Just because you actually make an effort and see what happens.

Finally a reason. Why couldn't anyone tell me this information over the last 2-3 months I've been asking?

International speeds have been ridiculously bad for the last few weeks in my experience. @AfriMan, are you guys doing anything to provision additional capacity? And if so, can you you provide some details, without the PR please?

I would like this info as well. Tomorrow is notice day, else im stuck with the same service for another month. Tell me when (DATE PLEASE!) more data will be provisioned. No answer by 12pm 25 October and I will assume the answer is 'we dont know' and I will cancel my account. Ive had enough of this.
