Afrihost APN not working?

I have the same problem with a sim since the first of February, phoned and emailed numerous times, still dead. Every time they tell me they will relay it to the mobile tech support or the mobile tech support says I should do this or that.

I have cancel the account, and tried to recreate it as instructed by them, now I cant add the number the error given is "number already in use".

Phoned another support agent last week, he said the number was voice activated not data activated, it would take about 24 hours to sort out. Still nothing.

Mtn internet APN works fine, only afrihost apn is dead, no data sent or received. I have had the sim in numerous devices same problem. I have another sim and voice/data account with them, which works fine in all the same devices with the afrihost apn. Just this particular sim and number.

I have basically given up on it, it is scheduled the be canceled at the end of the month.

I had hoped the stories about the terrible afrihost were a thing of the past, apparently not, if they cant sort out a mobile data problem in 18 days I guess I should also take my business else where.

edit: have you given consent to afrihost to manage the account? I have done that as well, still nothing.

Curiosity

So by now you have tried it in another device - as they suggested in the first place. You got tired of wondering what might happen ... you did try it, didn't you?

Yes i gave consent and the airtime was loaded, just no luck with the data apn. The tech also said he had no idea what was wrong...

If you haven't PM'ed AfriGenie yet I'm happy to look at this for you :)

Status Update:
I found an article on afrihost support about APN troubleshooting
https://support.afrihost.com/?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/356/78/how-do-i-connect-to-the-afrihost-apn

As explained the sim card must be enabled to connect to the afrihost APN.
Afrihost has now logged a ticket with MTN to investigate my sim and find out why it won't connect.

In order to connect to the "afrihost" APN, the following must be in place:

You need a qualifying MTN SIM card.
Your SIM card must be permitted to use the "afrihost" APN by the network.
Your SIM card must be registered with Afrihost
Your cellular device must be configured to use the APN "afrihost"

That article is a little dated, not sure if you got my PM?

Great stuff, it just started working now :D
Seems the problem was on MTN's side all along...

Thanks AfriGuy and AfriGenie, really appreciate the speedy help

That's great news, thanks for keeping us posted :)

Glad you got sorted, I paid for data and voice but all I got was voice, I did however get this email from Afrihost this morning.

Thank you for you E mail.

I do apologise for the delay in response.

You cannot sign up with that number until the cancellation has been done.

If you request for a new sim card with a new number it will be free but will pay for rica for R149-00.

If you get a Pre Paid Sim card from MTN you can also use that number to do the sign up.

Please feel free to contact us with any concerns.
Kind Regards

So since I have contacted afrihost more than 8 times about no data on this sim, should I ask/plead with Afriman or Afrigenie to fix this problem? I don't know why they have a tech support department if problems are mostly resolved through the mybb forums.

Do problems only get resolved when they become public? If I knew this before it could have saved me a lot of unnecessary calls.

Hi

Happy to look at this, drop me a PM with your details and the ticket ref# and I'll take a look.
The majority of our Support queries are resolved with our Support team :)

Not what I find, I am still waiting for feedback from a query I had about not being able to buy airtime, that was 10 days ago. On another I am just being told I must contact MTN directly. Makes me wonder why bother with Afrihost.

Reply from Afrihost

Finally got a reply from my request on the 4th, I asked why I am getting 3c charges, i use the Afrihost apn, it has not changed, but am getting these under "Other History" in the Afrihost app.

The reply was:

I hope you are well and thank you for trusting Afrihost.

Those 3 cents that you were charged is for the 0.021MB used.

Let us know if we can further assist you.

I have 8GB of the 10GB special remaining, why am I getting multiple charges for 0.021 MB. Afriman just passes the buck, says they cant do anything, I must contact MTN.

Support is really slipping at Afrihost.

No, not signed up to anything, checked with (*141*5#), I have set my MMS apn to a dummy name 'dummy' and have not received or sent any mms's.

Very strange.
I really don't see how these charges are coming in from our end - I'm afraid the only other to look at is to query this with MTN directly.

I have tried that, they don't know anything about Afrihost, they have told me that some apps like WhatsApp use airtime but they don't know why. It is pretty pointless phoning them.

The thing is, I signed up with Afrihost, I have unusual amounts coming off my account and Afrihost seems unwilling to assist.

I have this exact same issue. My airtime just decreases without me making calls etc, and Afrihost unwilling/unable to fix.
Yes the apn is correct, I sent them screenshots, and you can see on clienzone logs the connection is towards afrihost.

Quoting support after all the above done:
"if you switch your APN to MTN and use mobile data that would decrease your airtime balance" [DID that]
&
"Hmmmm, I wonder what could cause it" [Me wondering too, and paying]
&
"regarding the missing airtime, it's really hard to troubleshoot that" [read: We cant fix this]

Hopefully tomorrow I wake up and my money is back and my data working
