This seems to be consistent with when we see demand drop significantly in the evenings (especially in the South).

From 0 to full speed in an instant? Always at the exact same time? Weekdays as well as weekends, when usage patterns are surely different?

If all the hops timeout from hop 2, then it's likely that latency introduced at the second hop is extremely high :(

But it's would be unusual for another ISP account to work consistently and for a sustained period without showing the same symptoms eventually.

Hi Afriman

Well to be honest i ended up buying a WA capped account to get me through this and it has been working 100%... so i am left with this reality. AH account times out on tracert and performs very poorly while WA account is 100% fine... Please advise (this was as of last night and i have been on the WA account since.)

If I look at my reports of how demand rises and falls, it certainly does seem to be a consistent pattern so I am not surprised. We don't generally see gentle slopes for increase or drop off in demand, it's usually a dramatic spike or dip, and it's usually so consistent you can set your watch by it.

Think about traffic patterns. How often can you tell almost to the minute when traffic will be horrible and when it will be light?

I'd need more information on this, but it's unusual for the latency you experience to be that severe, even at peak.

Switched back to AH account and still getting timeouts all the way... did same test with WA and only 2nd hop timed out.

This is the AH account - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4288033117 upload speeds seem fine
This is the WA account - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4288037261 download not perfect on an 8mb synched line but much better

"it must be an issue with your line - PM me your account details so I can reset your account blah blah"

There is no way in explaining the slower speeds other than not enough capacity on Afrihosts side.

Still having issues with downloads and especially Windows Update. I have to update 8 computers this evening with the latest Windows updates, and I cannot sit for over an hour per machine. Any ideas why its so slow??

Sure, to bypass their shaping (on a business uncapped account) which is shaping windows update - Dial up to a VPN and you will get full speed.

Yo, dunno why you're posting on all our threads, would really appreciate if you post on the thread relative to the product you have with us.

You've also been making claims about our capacity and then admitted you worked for Telkom in a department not related to IPC provision. So I think it's not cool that you're doing the same thing again.

Both these tests don't seem ideal for a local ping, so I'd definitely want to test further. At the moment your speeds should be decent (I'm assuming you're in the South) so that should reflect ons speedtest.

Can you PM me so we can run some more tests?

Downloads should normal as far as I can tell, but if there network is seeing high demand then there could be some contention for bandwidth.

But it cannot be normal to have to wait 25mins to download a 825kb update? I have been with Afrihost for a few years, and have never had this amount of issues. Seems like things are really falling apart? if your network cannot cope, then why is it so difficult to try and get refunded for lack of service, no one in your accounts department is even aware there are issues. We cannot be expected to pay if you cannot deliver.

Things are definitely not falling apart. We are busy working with the network and reviewing all aspects of performance from gaming, streaming, downloads and even P2P. We're still working on this so we also need to give the technical team some time to complete their work.

But you guys seem to always react once the issues appear, what about being more proactive? From a clients perspective, it seems like your network is falling apart, and that is not what you should be happy with as this will drive existing and potential clients away. Remember, performance carries far more weight than idle promises, and we keep on hearing about these upgrades, but the same happened last year when you had IPC issues, things never improved when you said they would, and this is not acceptable.

Our business uncapped account can't stay connected for more than 3mins: reboot, account connects then drops (repeat). More like a guy failing to keep his .....up long enough. Threw in the spare Telkom account and it's lasting

We actively monitor our network and we have ongoing plans for capacity and updates to the system. However there are certain things we can only react to, like new behaviour or new traffic signatures for P2P which are not correctly identified (in most cases they are specifically designed to elude shaping systems).

We are not always able to give specific dates for capacity upgrades, which is why we try to avoid giving those commitments. It's not as simple as writing a cheque, it depends on Telkom's schedule and available resources. However, we have always confirmed when IPC has been ordered and later made available and to my knowledge this has always improved the experience of client's who's service issues were IPC related.

That's definitely not something we're seeing in general on the network.

Can you please PM your line number so I can check your connection logs?

That might all be true, but in the end you have a faulty product, and that is confirmed by many here on these forums.

I really don't think you can measure a network by the same criteria as a happy meal or by the ml's in a bottle of soda. Sorry I was just reading a Hellopeter complaint by this guy who counted the number of fries in his chicken meal and complained that there were too few.

A network is more like a living entity than a static commodity. At any given time there is variation in the number of users, type of demand, international and local factors like loadshedding or routing, and this is continually affecting the network and clients experience to some degree (not to mention local factors like your network, Telkom line, exchanges, etc). I do agree that there is a level which is considered OK, and below that is kinda not OK, at there are times (in certain regions) when our network performance currently drops below the OK mark, and we are definitely working on fixing that experience.
