Very slow speeds downloading from Steam, a 10GB download is taking 2 days. This used to download no problem during the night, now I have a download speed of 200MB in an hour and this is at night?? All tests show that my line is running 100% but even general browsing seems far slower than normal, good start to 2014.

Steam has also been set to download from Cape Town, so this should be a local download.

Try rebooting your router. I never let more than 24 hours pass without a reboot. I also find my connection gets saturated or something after torrenting a large amount of data, which could be a result of the high number of connections I allow.

It's also possible Steam is just slow atm.

So I just checked my fault on Telkom's site and the report was from September. Now this is strange for a few reasons; 1. I didn't put in my fault in September (I did it in December), 2. This was the fault reference AH gave me.
I am now forced to phone up Telkom and put in a fault for my voice line in the hopes that I can get my line fixed and then I can use ADSL. Paying R600 pm for a service I can't use is making me a bit angry and on top of this I have to buy more 3G for my phone and my MiFi because I don't have WiFi at home because i have no ADSL.

EDIT: Chris N. helped me over Live Chat Support and has promised to keep me updated on a daily basis regarding my fault. He has filed a fault on the ADSL line and I have filed one with Telkom on the voice line.

Will reboot router, although I have never had this issue before and I have never rebooted the router. Connection has been slow since xmas.

Never rebooting is a bad idea. My downloads can creep as low as 200KB/s on my 4Mbps connection and will jump to around 380KB/s after a reboot. But that's only if I forget to reboot for two or three days.

This is the reply I got to my previous e-mail:

"Hi Ryan

I trust you are well:-)

Please be advised that Intermittent problems of this kind can be particularly difficult to resolve because if it's just a simple configuration issue,
you tend to get consistency, even if that consistency manifests itself in poor results.

Please connected wired and the wireless disabled.
This eliminates any wireless factors affecting the line.
Dropouts are a very difficult issue to resolve.

If the dropouts seem to be occurring at the same time each day

(for example when a monitored alarm system is armed/de-armed) then it is just a case of correcting the filtering
(or installing a central splitter in the case for the monitored alarm).

If the dropouts are erratic, try the following:
1-)Disconnect all devices including phones, faxes and answering machines from the line to test.
Ensure there is no filter on the modem. If dropouts stop, issue may be with a faulty filter,
telephone device or a device needing a better quality filter.

2-) Check Router/Modem -

Run a continuous ping to your router ip and www.afrihost.com at the same time .
If the router ping times out, test it.

Test another modem on your telephone line, or test your modem on an active ADSL telephone line that is known to be working.

3-) Listen for any audible static on the line with the Broadband modem switched off, as
this can interfere with the ADSL service.

4-) If line sync is not dropping but the connection is, check that the modem doesn't have an idle timeout set.

Set "idle timeout" to always-on or zero

5-) When disconnecting the telephone devices from the lines, also disconnect the computers from the modem/router
so the only cables connected to it is the phone line and power cable.
If the modem/router does not dropout (check usage in CZ) while the computers are disconnected,
this usually indicates that something on your internal network is overloading the modem and causing it to "lock up".
Run anti-virus and spyware scans on all computers connected in the network.

Thanks and Regards

How many more times must I do those exact same tests and report back to Afrihost? Seriously, if it takes Gian himself to go to Telkom and slap a tech, then that will have to do.

I repeat: 10 months now and still no resolution to the LINE FAULT (as confirmed by Afrihost themselves on numerous occasions).
I know Telkom sucks with service, but 10 months has been long enough to be patient about this.

End of January 2013 this issue is resolved or I cancel. Case closed.

Call Telkom and report a voice fault. When the guy is there tell him your ADSL is poked.

Problem?

We aren't seeing any general issues on our end, the latency on the 2nd hop is a bit inconsistent though :(
You still seeing issues here?

Just to add to this, when doing Speedtests it normally picks me up in Durban. However the last few days it shows Cape Town as my closest server, and then the Speedtest doesn't complete. Nothing changed on my side, using the Afrihost issued DNS and everything.

That's a bit odd, what DNS entries do you have setup on your router?

Hi Afriguy,

The latency is not the issue here. The problem is that i can't access the themorningpint.com via Afrihost, but I can with Openweb. The tracert shows an infinite loop between two routers on the mtn network - see hop 8 and onward. I've just done another tracert and it's still doing the same thing.

It actually just seems to be an issue with routing to that one IP, because I can ping most other 66.147.244.0/24 IP addresses from my end
