Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

I think it's safe to say that you'll only see a stable connection once Telkom have sorted this out. Until then, it will be up and down :(

Sadly, my patience is running thin now. I think 10 months is long enough to be patient, right?
This is my reply to Indrani Narain's email to me:

"Hi.

I have done those, and similar tests so many times over the last 10 months.
General consencus from almost all other feedback from Afrihost says it is a line fault.

Fact remains that there has been no feedback from anyone at Telkom to me in the last 10 months regarding this problem. I have even logged faults by phoning them, and nothing happened.

I need this fixed by the end of January 2014, or I will cancel my ADSL, Mifi and web hosting with Afrihost.

I know it is not Afrihost's fault, but I am paying you guys and getting sub-par service.

Regards."

Hi Ryan

I trust you are well:-)

Please be advised that Intermittent problems of this kind can be particularly difficult to resolve because if it's just a simple configuration issue,
you tend to get consistency, even if that consistency manifests itself in poor results.

Please connected wired and the wireless disabled.
This eliminates any wireless factors affecting the line.
Dropouts are a very difficult issue to resolve.

If the dropouts seem to be occurring at the same time each day

(for example when a monitored alarm system is armed/de-armed) then it is just a case of correcting the filtering
(or installing a central splitter in the case for the monitored alarm).

If the dropouts are erratic, try the following:
1-)Disconnect all devices including phones, faxes and answering machines from the line to test.
Ensure there is no filter on the modem. If dropouts stop, issue may be with a faulty filter,
telephone device or a device needing a better quality filter.

2-) Check Router/Modem -

Run a continuous ping to your router ip and www.afrihost.com at the same time .
If the router ping times out, test it.

Test another modem on your telephone line, or test your modem on an active ADSL telephone line that is known to be working.

3-) Listen for any audible static on the line with the Broadband modem switched off, as
this can interfere with the ADSL service.

4-) If line sync is not dropping but the connection is, check that the modem doesn't have an idle timeout set.

Set "idle timeout" to always-on or zero

5-) When disconnecting the telephone devices from the lines, also disconnect the computers from the modem/router
so the only cables connected to it is the phone line and power cable.
If the modem/router does not dropout (check usage in CZ) while the computers are disconnected,
this usually indicates that something on your internal network is overloading the modem and causing it to "lock up".
Run anti-virus and spyware scans on all computers connected in the network.

Thanks and Regards

Give me 40 metres of cable and I will fix the line myself. From the pole outside our property to another one on the other side, then into the house. Should take me less than 10 months to fix.

Hey Afri(fillintheblank) or anyone in the know :)

Which account would you go for:
4mb shaped or 2mb unshaped?

It depends on your specific needs. Unshaped is a good option, but not always affordable (though our current prices are pretty awesome). With shaped, you can still get the performance you need if your priority is realtime services like gaming or streaming, and not downloads or torrents.

It really depends on your own preferences :)

I'm sorry that your line is not performing again. I think to be fair though, we have been trying to assist you to get this resolved. I know our Critical Care team has been involved a few times to try and get a solution for you.

Drop me a PM and we can chat about what options you have going forward :(

Hey Afri(fillintheblank) or anyone in the know :)

If those were my only two options I'd take the 4Meg shaped.

What do you use internet for anyway?

For most things the 4Meg shaped will be better.

Now asking for me.

How's netflix on Afrihost business?

Seriously considering moving now, but all these problems lately make me worry.

Performance? What performance?

I'm using the DNS settings on your website from last year.

Can you be more specific about which DNS settings you're using. We did have a DNS cluster issue last year and some people changed to Google or Open DNS and never changed back.

Will you drop me a PM so I can help with this?

Didn't really answer my question. I know most things will work fine. I'm worried about Netflix(and twitch) specifically.

Oh whoops, sorry. Netflix works fine for me on home, but I'm not sure about twitch (dont use it that often)

No need to apologise, you guys are doing everything you can to help solve this Hellscum issue.
I applaud you for and other Afrihost staff for trying to at least help, unlike certain other companies.

I went for a ride on my bike and have now calmed down. Woosa! Woosa!

Connection is back after rebooting the router twice since I got back, let's see what happens for the rest of the day.
5.9Mb and seems to be OK. Will start some downloads and monitor from there.

I do not understand how the line can be syncing so perfectly but have such bad speeds? It makes no sense to me at all? The only thing that I can think of is that the backbone between the exchange and MTN is bust?
