I am on a 8mb line and downloaded an NZB of 5gb at 800kb/s.

Not at home during the day so cant comment.

Could someone in the Pretoria or surrounding area please post a trace route to a European server. I'm planning on signing up for the 10Mbs business and want to get a feel for latencies and routing.

My line fault is now 16 days old. Soon it will begin to crawl and call me Dada.

Last night was significantly better, but the performance of this account overall can best be described as "patchy". When it's performing, it's ridiculously fast. The problem is these periods of performance are unreliable. Even with the improved speeds last night, there are times when videos will not stream, or pages will time out, for absolutely no reason. This will last some random period of time, and then burst back.

Latencies are also all over the place. I have a couple of web servers I work on regularly hosted both locally and internationally - and like everything else on this account - one moment the latency is barely perceptible, and the next I'm waiting 10 seconds for a directory listing to come through. It's really bizarre, and not at all something I'd want to deal with on a permanent basis.

I'm also checking out NNTP speeds currently, and am getting a paltry 300k/sec - on a 10mbps, business uncapped, at 15h34 in the afternoon. Extremely unimpressive.

Just signed up for a 1mb business uncapped and have to say it was flying compared to mweb .... constant 130KB, while with mweb it maxed out at 110KB and usually fluctuated from 30KB up to 110KB.
I only hope that it will be maintained, and will deteriorate over time.
For now though, I thought I would give Afrihost props for a very good account that performs as they say... unshaped :)
I am in the exact same position, just cancelled my account with Mweb (went from loving them to absolutely loathing them) . I am seriously considering the 1mbps Business uncapped bundle, I'm just wondering if those speeds you mentioned are maintained at least 70% of the time?

Thanks.
Thats 40ms higher than my current IS account.

Yeah if latency is important to you and you're not in or near Cape Town, I wouldn't suggest Afrihost or Axxess or anyone that uses the MTN network.

so far(only been 10 days) it has been great ... compared to my mweb account that always seemed to be shaped/throttled ...
getting almost full speed all the time, whereas with mweb only get full speed maybe from midnight to 5am or so

600k/sec maximum on NNTP after 5pm.. switched over to my Openweb Gold account - instantly 953k/sec.

My latency skyrocketed to 1000ms at around 5pm as well, had to switch to my FNB Connect backup. What gives?

Yeah, the crazy shaping on Mweb is the reason I decided to cancel. I think I'm probably going with Afrihost. My only other option is Openweb Gold, but I've had a bad experience with Openweb in the past.

That doesn't seem right.
Can you drop me a PM with your details and a tracert so we can see where this high latency is coming from?

Can I please get the number of someone who can get my line fixed!

I get absolutely NO feedback from Afrihost. My ticket is open since 24 June guys. I am seriously getting pissed off now. What am I paying for?

my 4meg line is probably 95% of the time running great

wonderful product

So I'm thinking of the 10Mb Business account. Latencies are a small thing atm so I'm sacrificing here, but do you guys think that the account will actually perform as well as it's marketed as in terms of data rate 24/7?
My DSL line is 100% stable so that wont ever (hopefully) become a variable here.

TL;DR
Are my expectations of having a good, unshaped experience most of the day too high?

Well, I had month of that, before my line fault. Never saw any shaping or slow down, 24/7. I guess, there could be some exchange congestion, but then you would encounter that whatever package you chose.
