Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

And to be honest if I can have a skype call and push code to github I will be happy, I mean doing those two things at the same time.

I don't understand how mine could be working though?? How does that make sense? Surely it would affect everybody :wtf:

Capped is working fine and when I got a business account to test (from another user who was having issues in CPT), it also seemed to run perfectly?

I think its because the shaper only kicks in after a couple of minutes, maybe even an hour?

"Shaper" isnt really the right thing to say, cause these accounts are unshaped :/ However I think the contention is an issue.

Its possible that I wasn't affected after the short testing process, so yea, thats possible.

What do your pings look like?

Are you saying you tested another user's uncapped account on your phone line? Did Afrihost know about this?

When running speedtest I used to get 2mb on the dot.
Now I rarely get 1.5mb. I have changed to my webafrica account also no difference.

this is since i moved my line to afrihost.
ANY HELP PLZ??

Yes thanks Taranis. This is perfectly alright. You cannot run more than one connection simultaneously - that's it.

If you got full 2Mbps, it could mean that you possibly had a higher line speed, and when you moved over your line it was downgraded. Could you check what your router is syncing at in your router status page :)

Yes but how will I know if this effects my area? My guess is I won't know, and if it doesn't help in my area what other options do I have? Will telkom compensate me for the last 12 months of extremely poor service? Is there any way to be moved to another exchange? I need more options :( on the brink of just giving up and cancelling the line altogether.

It's very difficult to manage these kinds of long term issues. But Telkom do have specialised units with reports on throughput and the quality of your connection once they monitor it. Hopefully that's something that can become available if their general technicians are not able to assist.

With regard to compensation, you can log a dispute with Telkom, and in some cases they do credit you. Generally this is in cases of no service at all for an extended period. They may regard a working (though slow) connection as within the best effort service provision. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try though :(

I might be wrong, but AFAIK you must have reported a fault with them and your speeds must be below what is classified as broadband speed.
Not sure about the classification nowadays, but isn't it something like 640kbps?

Also if it is a 2 Mbps line, don't think Telkom will do much if you report speeds close to 1.5Mbps.

Edit:
Looks like the minimum for 4Mbps is 640kbps
The minimum I have found is 256kbps, but it is dated 2007, so not sure if it is still applicable or what is acceptable for 2Mbps, that is if you do have a 2Mbps line.

If I can't work I loose money, if you don't work you don't feed your family or your drug addiction so go and talk **** elsewhere please.

Afrihost is great, but I expect more from a business package than what I am receiving.

I know that this is frustrating, and it really down't matter what you use your connection for. You expect a certain level of performance, and when that isn't there, I think you have every reason to be peeved.

If there was more I could do from my side - I promise I would do it. Until Telkom gives us the capacity we ordered, we're all going to have to make the best we can together. Especially with regard to scheduling torrents and downloads for off-peak and overnight and just hanging in there until the IPC is switched on.

Changing your line over from another ISP or Telkom has no physical effect on the line itself, it's just a billing change and opens administrative tools on their system. It's very unlikely to affect any performance issues, or at least it should not in theory.

Was it an immediate change in performance? Remember that many exchanges are seeing much higher demand since Telkom upgraded lines for free.

"Best effort service"? So it's perfectly alright for them to take the full amount of money that's paid and it's fine for me to get less than half of the service 'promised'? It baffles me how this is just accepted and theres nothing I can do about it. Why is it ok to just rob people of their money blindly and we must just accept it because 'there's nothing they can do' for me?
