Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

If you're looking to download , you'll be at full line speed day and night. I haven't had a better downloading experience from any other uncapped account at any other ISP. Browsing is good, but you might run into a few problems from time to time.

Ditto, this account is a pleasant breeze.. Was previously on OpenWeb Gold, but weekday performance on OpenWeb was shockingly poor.

Any news on static IP's?

I have moved from Mweb (bleh) to Afrihost Business and the last week has been an awesome experience. FTP/SFTP/SSH/VPN/Voip - it all just works so extremely well. Performance of throughput is awesome irrespective of the day/time.

Online gaming shows substantially less lag compared to Mweb and streaming (twitch) runs without a glitch. - Awesome job Afrihost!

My account is performing great, but latency to Google has tripled. It used to be around 60ms, now it's between 185 and 225ms. Rebooting the router and ensuring that no one is downloading or streaming doesn't help. What's up with this?

My only complaint with the account (besides the issues being investigated) is Youtube streaming. It is abysmal. The account is 10mbps, but even if it were only going at half speed, it should be able to stream 720p without constant buffering. I haven't had to pause a video to let it stream so I could actually watch it uninterrupted in years.

What DNS are you using?

You're being directed to international Google instead of local.

Shouldn't make any difference to Google services though.

Youtube works great for me. Even 720p, and I'm on a 4Mbps account.

If you're using the Windows firewall, there's a command that improves Youtube performance for most people. Open Command Prompt as administrator and type:
Code:
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="YOUTUBEFIX" dir=in action=block remoteip=173.194.55.0/24,206.111.0.0/16 enable=yes

The command can be undone with:
Code:
netsh advfirewall firewall delete rule name="YOUTUBEFIX"

I'm using the Afrihost DNS settings. Yeah, I see latency to several local websites is below 50ms. No worries I guess...

I'm running Ubuntu, but yeah, I implemented the same rules with iptables and it didn't help in the slightest unfortunately.

Some good info regarding Static IP's....dunno if i would like the idea though..

"Static and Dynamic IP just refer to the way your IP is allocated.

Advantages of a Static IP for you:
- If you run servers, you will always know where in the world it is and or login remotely - Dynamic IP has the potential of changing IP's every time the lease is renewed. This means you can do away with using dyndns etc to track your server down.
- If their DHCP goes down, chances are if you've hardcoded your IP, gateway, DNS - you can still remain online.
- Less "disruption" to your service when renewing your IP doesn't work, or doesn't result in the same IP. Less "wasted" data continually renewing IP every few hours.

Disadvantages of a Static IP for you:
- Some sites with limiting based on IP only will not be able to be fooled by an IP renewal (change of IP).
- May make you easier to be targeted by any copyright notices as the IP is tied to the user.
- May make you more identifiable - if the other user knows you are a static IP, they can keep attacking your systems with confidence it is you. Also sites which want to identify your behaviour will be able to keep logs about it.
- Can't do old trick of having a switch behind some cable modems to share connection (which act as a bridge) - which allows each computer to get an IP from your ISP instead of using a proper router."

Are you still seeing issues here? If so, drop me a PM and we'll see what we can do :)

It definitely seems much improved today. I can reliably stream 720p for I think the first time since using the account. Were some modifications made or is this a really ridiculous coincidence? :)

Last night Netflix was horrible, buffering every couple of minutes. Never had that before. Put up some ISOs for download and hit linespeed for a long time, so it was probably the NetFlix stuff getting prioritized somewhere. Hulu was bad as well.
