Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

So I have gone to the clientzone and activated my static IP. Now what ? Will I get an email containing the details to establish the VPN (username, password & host)

EDIT: I want to set this up on a Mikrotik

Hi, I also have no idea, I was hoping to test it on the Afrihost account and then decide if the static ip is the way to go. I was going to email Netgear again tonight, and they are in the USA.

If you figure it out let me know. Not too impressed with this routers wifi range though, the Gigabit Ethernet is very nice though.

Were did you buy the router?

PS has there been changes to this forum, cant make any posts via nay version of IE?

You can cancel it after a month yes, it works just like our normal cancellations. As long as your router is compatible to use a L2TP tunnelling you should be fine :)
 
Static IP address (finally) request sent! YAY!

Edit 1: Ok reconfigured my Billion 810VGTX.

@Afrihost can you check to see if it is working?

You should be getting a new IP from our static range. Drop me a PM with what IP you're getting and I'll let you know if it's all right :)

Unfortunately no on both. Capped and 3G using dynamic IP assignment, so L2TP would not be supported to my knowledge, unless I'm understanding the question incorrectly

Ok, I think you answered correctly :whistle:

1) Just to be sure, Capped DSL Bundles, can we add static IP addresses to them or is it only available for Business Uncapped DSL?

2) Your L2TP server used for the static IP accounts only accept connections from Afrihost IP addresses, So because I use a Afrihost 3G product I should be able to terminate my static IP over 3G when ADSL fails? (I will test it myself)

@Afriman, I cannot get your vpn stuff working from a linux machine :( do you guys have some guides?

Did you get any further with the Netgear Router? I got a further response from Netgear, and they now claim its not possible at all, the first support chap gave me the incorrect information.

It would be nice to have a few guides though for Linux and Windows
 
Afrihost can shove their static ips :)

They have released something their support team cannot support

No matter which DSL package you are using or provider that you are paying for access, you will always receive a dynamic IP assigned to you. Telkom makes it impossible for any ISP to assign a static ip on that level, hence why all ISPs are using tunnels.

Once you have authenticated your dsl account and received a dynamic ip, you initiate a tunnel to a LNS on Afrihost's network, in order to authenticate and assign a static IP. Of course, the customer's modem/router needs to be set up correctly so that it now route all traffic over the tunnel and not the dyanmic ip.

If your network engineers setup the LNS correctly, they would only allow certain IPs to be able to authenticate the tunnel in order to receive a static IP. There should be no reason why you can not add your own mobile 'dynamic ip ranges' to the LNS so that the tunnel can be built over either DSL or GSM.

Thats now if you have your own ip address space on your APN and not using MTN's space.

Yeah, only business DSL will be able to access static IP's.

We would identify the account by the 'username" and assign an IP based on this. A 3G product will not be able to be assigned an IP address that will qualify for the service, so it would be rejected.
