Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Your first hop to your router is pretty intense. Unless you're using some kind of special setup, that should always be sub 1ms. Anything unusual happening on your local network?

Woah just noticed that too. Hmm, my router is 4 years old, maybe it is time for an upgrade. :(

On a side note I have been having A LOT of difficulty with support lately.

I used to have a 10Mbit line where I live, so I know that my area support it.

I have a 4Mbit business bundle now, but I would like to regrade my line to 10Mbit. Each time that I ask your support guys to request the regrade I am told it is not possible.

"We again tried to regrade your line and unfortunately it is not possible, and that's the
feedback that we got from Telkom as well. This is because your line is connected to
a GDMT hardware, and it will not allow us to put it over 4096. Please find attached."

The above snippet is what I received from an associate. This is fine except that I had a telkom technician at my house the other day. I asked him to put my line on a multimode port as the exchange does support that. He then phoned in to make the switch but was told that MY LINE IS ALREADY ON MULTIMODE.

Now it is clear to my that whatever interface Afrihost, or your contacts at Telkom are using to check my line is displaying STALE data. This is why my request keeps getting rejected. Is there anyway that you can help me here. I am desperate to get my line sorted. If not, then my only option will be to request that my line is transferred back to Telkom.

So send a pm to TelkomZA.

I'd obviously need to look deeper into but we generally get that info directly off Telkom's portal, which talks to the exchange and returns the info we see. Not sure whether we can verify what the technician saw at the exchange, but the fact that you're still not getting the speeds would lead me to believe that human error is more likely than system error.

Drop me a PM and I'll check.

High ping doesn't have to mean high congestion on the exchange. I too had very poor ping times. See my traceroute and you will notice where the first big latency bump is.

Yup, you are right :) But still - if it were a latency jump further down - the entire network would be experiencing it.

When I was with a different ISP (other than Afrihost), I was trying to download a legit 4gig ISO from Microsoft - at that ISP's speed the browser said it would take 4 days.
It bombed out a few times, after a week I gave up.

With afrihost : 1 night and it was done. No problems at all.

Afrihost, at this stage things are going really smoothly with you guys

That's awesome. We love hearing that the internet joy is reaching more people ;)

Still no joy with P2P on 10MB Business - 6kB/s MAX... no matter what sites, including local.
Other downloads fluctuate and drop as low as 300kB/s - this is a far cry from the flawless performance for the last 2 months. All this since Sunday 15:00. There is nothing wrong at all with my line.

So much for no throttling or shaping on Business Uncapped :-(
I have logged a ticket, and updated it this morning at 09:00, but heard NOTHING since yesterday - Cape Town needs more capacity!

Just in case I get asked :P

48 hours and no reply to my ticket. Honestly if the ISP wasn't this good I would have moved away just because of the support.

YIP... this is what is so frustrating :(
The other ticket I logged for my Dad's uncapped acccount didn't get a response for 48 hrs... it is now almost a week of back and forth, 4 different respondents, and now back at "Please perform a few tests for us...." WTF????

We have established long ago that ALL these issues in Cape Town are between Telkom and Afrihost - THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ANY OF OUR LINES :-(

Well, in my case there is actually something wrong with the Telkom lines in my area ;) But yes, support leaves a lot to be desired.

Would you mind switching protocol prioritization off and then back on in clientzone? There might be an issue somewhere.

What you could also try - is going into your router settings and changing the encapsulation from GDMT to Adsl2+ :)

Or you would have to replace your router - as it is clear that it is at fault :(

Edit: OH! And make sure you have a POTS filter connected to EVERY phone line and alarm :)

Thanks for the suggestion... I did try that on Tuesday, but it didn't make any difference, even after restarting the router after the change. I tried it just now... still no joy :(

Hmm? Strange. Drop Afriman a PM, he should be able to sort you out :)

I am considering switching to Afrihost Business Uncapped 6Mbps at the end of the month, but I keep reading about people having issues in CPT. Is this true for a lot of CPT people or are these isolated cases?

The Cape Town shaping is unrelated to business accounts - as people on business accounts are unshaped 24/7

Thanks for the feedback, that is how I understood it, but it seems some people are having issues which might be related to their lines, etc. Looking forward to joining Afrihost at the end of March.

Hey hey

I am in the CT southern suburbs and I have zero issues with my AH 2Mbs business unshaped package.
My previous ISP was issue after issue, with that account being unusable for even browsing from 9AM to 5PM.
Office hours and after hours are all full speed for me now.

The only regret I have is not signing up for this AH account last year!

Afriman - Have PMd you ..... Get off the X Box and give me the good news .... help to proceed..... :D:D

With any luck, within 24 hours you will be taking some loot out of my account and I will be be the happiest internet user in darkest deepest Africa ....:D
