Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

The only reason why they aren't intended to be streamed outside the US is because of legislation. Otherwise Twitch and Ustream and all other US services will also be negatively affected by Afrihost! The internet has no boundaries!

Why do we get lower latency to the US/Europe on other ISP's if Afrihost is supposed to be on a superior network??

I think AfriGenie is making the point that it's difficult to optimise for those services when they are technically not allowed here. So subscribers would use proxy services like UnoTelly etc to disguise their location, and that makes it difficult for us to optimise for, where we can do so for our own DNS.

US services can be unpredictable because of the massive size of the US. A content server based on the east coast is going to show much better latency than a server on the west coast. Because of how their networks are setup, you could be routed directly from one state to another, or via several networks to the destination server.

Why should it have been gone by 10:00? I thought no throttling or shaping is applied to capped users? If Afrihost has contention paterns that can be predicted/expected by the hour, then you still have major IPC issues. If you say again you don't have IPC issues, then why the need for the strict network management rules?

I'm talking about latency on the overall network, and shaping applied to Uncapped accounts (pretty sure I said that specifically). I'm saying that I did not see as big a rise in latency overall on the network (in the South) and what increased latency there appeared to be returned to normal before 10pm. We didn't make that happen, this is the network's behaviour responding to demand.

And that response is why I've cancelled. This month has been ridiculously shocking.

We've definitely seen horrible latency over the last month, possibly worse than I've seen before on our network. We definitely acknowledge that our network is nowhere near what it should be and what we'd like it to be.

I can only promise that we have real plans to make comprehensive changes, and I'm hoping to be able to give you guys some confirmation and rough timeframes as soon as I can get the go ahead from the team working on this.

What blows my mind is Afrihost will apply shaping to uncapped accounts because they say they don't want to affect other customers' experience but they keep accepting new customers instead of taking down their details and telling them they currently can't accept new customers because they're in the process of upgrading their infrastructure to handle a bigger client base.

@Afriman
You'd have far less of a PR nightmare, if any, to deal with.

I need to stress that no shaping is applied to either the Capped or Business accounts. Saying that though, there may be a poor experience due to demand and what's been mentioned before. This is very, very different from shaping - and is not a constant on the network.

If it came to a point where we simply could not take on more clients we'd take actions from there, it's not there though. Even if we did this today, or last month - no difference would be seen. I'm afraid there's no quick fix - we have to wait for the improvements to be implemented.

This is the capped thread, which is purportedly unshaped.

It gets confusing if your replies refer to different products. May as well have one big Afrihost gemors thread.

Gaming this evening is tricky. The ping looks low and inviting, but the game continues to be choppy and times out after around 20-25 mins every time.

More people = more demand surely?

Look, if the bandwidth is constantly "in demand" then we will often see symptoms resembling shaping because your management software goes into overdrive and the ping shoots up or the speed drops.

In my opinion the problem from my end is the rapid ping change, whch causes a choppy experience. If Afrihost is trying to manage scarce bandwidth with some miracle software then it's a loser.

:(

That seems to be a very consistent time-out, are you seeing your connection drop as well? Or is the disconnection just happening in the game?

looks like they are shaping capped accounts lol. been seeing it everyday since the start of April around that time my capped account comes to life sometimes it works normal during the day but 90% of the time it just does nothing

I can't re-iterate this enough, there is definitely no shaping being applied to any of our Capped or Business Uncapped users.

There is however a significant drop-off in demand on our network from 09h00, and this does mean that from around 10h00 each User should be getting the full bandwidth that they need.

This morning Youtube was unusable..
Tonight I am streaming at 1080p...

Its Friday night [X]
Everyone is at the shopping malls [X]
Nobody is at home streaming [X]

So guess what, same old SA crap... oversell.. oversell.. oversell..

Watch how the internet degrades again when everyone has blown their salaries at the mall, and everyone starts getting onto Netflix again.. Monday is probably going to be dead...

It appears only to apply in-game.

I sometimes get timeouts when browsing, but these are random and quite rare.

I was running out of cap on my main other-ISP account. I thought R20 for a few Afrihost GBs will be fine, but I get a mere 0.1Mbps on it now, compared to 6.7Mbps on my main account. I haven't used Afrihost in a while, is this the current norm?

Let's see how it is this morning (while most are at the shopping mall)

Why bother... Youtube taking 1 1/2 minutes just to open... can't watch at higher than 480p without severe buffering

There were a number of factors in play that resulted in the day, I'm by no means saying that these delays are acceptable, but in the coming days we'll be able to go into more detail once we put out the latest update.

Yeah look there is no acceptable excuse for failing to deliver a service for months, you guys just f'd up badly.

Internet Service is absolutely crap this morning. Struggling to open websites and streaming is almost a no go.

Yesterday, latency was perfect 9ms-13ms could play all day Smite with 170-220ms. By the looks of it on TeamSpeak shows at the moment got 9ms, going to try out some battlefield 4 now.

Though I haven't tried streaming or YouTube, but gaming was fine for me.

Let is know how it goes.

I tried last night, and the ping was low but very jumpy. Gameplay was jittery and I was timing out all the time.

It looks like they are playing about with speed and latency.
