Nope, he was never offered that option despite dealing with tickets since January (every month a few) - similar to me, he could not hold a VPN connection which was crucial for his work. I just asked him if he can give me a recent ticket number and he said "I am so over those {censored}".

That's really disappointing to hear. We're really putting a lot of work into our Support Team so that situations like this do not arise again.

Please, if you guys know of anyone in a similar situation, ask them to reach out to us or via our Social Media channels.

To be honest, I think if your customer care team was more pro-active, they should have assisted customers like this. A simple task would have been to get touch with customers who had issues and follow-up. The guy I mentioned is a techie and he exhausted all networking/tracing options, did telephone line tests (to actually test the copper/noise) - I doubt that your regular customers would have that knowledge. I would even think that your regular customers would not even know that their internet is slow and would be able to contact your technical team with the necessary background information - guys like this would then eventually listen to their techie-friends and move to another ISP.

I think it's best for us to deal with him directly and try to work through. It's really difficult to work with second hand information, so I think we'd pretty much be speculating here :(

FWIW: A co-worker has been struggling with AH for months - it was a back-and-forth blame-game about his line, port-resets and all sorts of other shenanigans. He gave notice and switched to VOX last week and while on AH his 4mb ADSL line could never sync/run faster than 2mb (on a very, very, very good day), he has been running on >3,5mb with VOX.

I had the same experience with Afrihost. I was given an Afrigreen account but still had problems of slow speeds/poor line, etc. Pingtest always reported that my line when connected to Afrihost was a grade D line but when connected to Webafrica is miraculously became a grade B line! I put up with this for a month or more and finally cancelled my Afrihost capped account last month.
Sorry to leave you Afrihost but I couldn't put up with the problems you guys are having any longer.

Sorry to hear you're leaving us :(
When last did you test Afrigreen? Things have been making good strides forward.

What is this Afrigreen?
I have a 10Gb package just in case VOX dies but using it on Thursday and Friday was so painful it was worthless.
I don't ever think I'll use Afrihost again based on those 2 days.

It's our brand new POC network :)
Have you signed up for testing here? https://www.afrihost.com/landing/network_test/

Nope.
I won't be testing anything.
I want something that's going to work, not to trial a product for you.
Sorry.

My current account is useless on Afrihost, change it to afrigreen and be done with it if you're so sure of your product.

Just offering the option :) The feedback has generally been quite good, we're a few weeks in on the POC so most major bugs/ issues have been ironed out.

So I have a 4mb line, capped. Any reasons why Twitch can't stream without stuttering even on Low (360p?) but YouTube Livestream can stream at 480p, even 720p if it wasn't 60fps, without any problems at all?

I rarely am able to stream Twitch without issues, but if YouTube is working so well why is Twitch lagging behind? Even my netgraph looks inconsitent for Twitch but YouTube you can actually see it's using the line to its full potential.

Is this a software issue (Flash vs HTML5)? Or is Twitch being throttled/put in low priority? Or maybe DNS issues? I'm just throwing words around but I'm really curious as to why there's this massive discrepancy.

We definitely don't throttle/ shape streaming or Twitch itself. To be perfectly honest though, we've seen very mixed results from the sites itself - including our own tests. From what I've personally seen, Twitch is extremely bandwidth heavy.

I also think constant buffering on the site is something that every user has seen - including international users.

Have you tried Afrigreen to see if the experience is any better though? Which DNS servers are you currently using?

Try a test account from an ISP that has an IS backbone to compare.

I'm not sure which ISP runs on which backbone, but I just tested with my friends' WebAfrica capped account and CrystalWeb capped account and I can stream up to high on my 4mb. I can't even stream low right now on my Afrihost capped account without Twitch buffering. It's literally trying to stream using 10kbps - 50kbps... That's what the net graph looks like. It's also completely erratic so it's not like there is a hard limit.

I would actually record a video of the net graph and Twitch stream but I'm not that frustrated yet.

So....

Great latency tonight guys. 560 ms ping to local gaming servers. Thanks Afrihost-of-problems. I am enjoying playing games on your network.

Dear Afriman,
I would like to know how the cancellation works. If I cancel within this week, do I ride out this month only, or next month as well.
I have a capped account.
Thank you

I am not Afriman but I have been through the exercise.

If you cancel before the 24th of the month you will not be billed for the following month, nor ever again unless you buy another package.

The alternative, also before the 24th, is to suspend the account. You can stop payment for up to 3 months without actually cancelling the account. That is the best option if you just want to ride out the POC fiasco, then decide if it is worth returning.

In either case you account will continue working until midnight on the last day of the month as the Data was paid for in advance.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Chris

Got onto the PC this morning (5min ago) and no internet connection. See that I am syncing with the exchange so I switched to a test account and now it works.

This is truly unacceptable...

Just wanted to add, you can cancel now and if the network improves (hope for a miracle) you can cancel the cancellation.

Any cancellations we receive before the 25th of the current month will be effective from the end of the current month.

Have you had a chance to test out one of the AfriGreen accounts? We're seeing promising improvements especially with regards to gaming.

Send me a PM with your ADSL username and I'll generate a set of details for you.

Are you on an AfriGreen account? We're not seeing any authentication issues on the network at the moment. Can you please try out your AfriHost account again and if you still don't have any throughput, please send me a PM with your ADSL username.

Hullo AfriGenie,

Thank you for the information. I am sorry to put it so bluntly, but having a local ping of 550 ms plus is not a good experience. Try playing a game with that latency.
In my opinion, Afrihost must laughing their socks off. The status page on the afrihost website hasn't changed in a month.

I have found a better alternative, I am willing to pay more for a better experience that always struggling along with afrihost.

So I will be not be doing another month of this.

Thanks for times that the network was stable and worked. Those guys who managed that deserves a bottle of Scotch.

Impersonating Afriman is punishable by death. Or at the very least a severe hangover ;)
